Eighty-five years ago, Iron Range citizens and local leaders recognized that the region’s future depended on supporting its natural resource industries while building a broader, more diverse economy. That vision continues to guide Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation today.

In her latest Mesabi Tribune MINE edition column, Commissioner Ida Rukavina reflects on the agency’s history, from supporting taconite research and new employers to strengthening downtowns and transforming former mining lands into recreation destinations. She also looks ahead to the investments in people, innovation and partnerships that will help northeastern Minnesota adapt to a changing economy.

Expanding housing options for workers, families and seniors is essential to northeastern Minnesota’s economic future.

Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation (IRRR) Commissioner Ida Rukavina highlighted that message today at the Northeast Regional Housing Forum, hosted by Minnesota Housing at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm. She discussed how IRRR’s work with Minnesota Housing is helping advance housing projects amid the region’s aging housing stock, infrastructure challenges and high construction costs.

IRRR Community Development Director Whitney Ridlon shared an overview of the agency’s housing grant program and its results.

The forum also featured panel discussions on local housing solutions, development resources and strategies to expand homeownership and rental housing across northeastern Minnesota.

“No single organization can solve our housing challenges alone. But together, we’re making real progress,” Rukavina said.
