Mariner High School seniors participated in a student-led Legislative Forum on Monday, October 19, sponsored by the school’s social studies teachers.

Featured speakers were Representative Julio Cortes and Galeeb Kachra from Sound Transit.

Representative Cortes shared his story of how and why he became a public servant for the City of Everett and why he ran for the State Legislature. He then fielded questions from students. While many were interested in the proposed cell phone ban to be introduced this January in the Legislative session, others asked about his work with human services and his opinion of how the community can be made safer.

Galeeb Kachra of Sound Transit talked about the proposed light rail extension from Lynnwood to Everett. Students were given a handout detailing the proposed routes and broke into groups to discuss and share their thoughts on the plan.

Sound Transit invites all students, staff and community to learn more about the light rail project and share thoughts or make comments through Sound Transit.

Following the forum, students in the American Government classes sponsored a voter’s registration drive, where students had the opportunity to visit a voter information table, make vote buttons, and visit a table from the Mukilteo YMCA to learn about Youth in Government and a Mock Trial. Way to go, Marauders!

Boats-A-Float at Kamiak! 🚣‍♀️🚣🏿🚣🏾‍♀️
Kamiak High School students in Myola Shanholtzer’s advanced engineering design class launched eight boats during the seventh annual Float Your Boat Regatta held Friday, Oct. 2.

The Float Your Boat Regatta challenges student groups to build a boat using only a fixed amount of cardboard and duct tape and limited to 15 pounds. For every pound over 15 pounds, a .5 second is added to their time. The boats are graphed on paper before construction. The boat must be supported by two students as they row the length of the pool as fast as they can without sinking.

Students learned about naval architecture and quickly became familiar with concepts such as reserve buoyancy, structural integrity, hull types, and how to watch their aft. This year, one team constructed the first-ever pontoon boat.

Congratulations to winners Shaian Kulmurzaev, Camden Bjorkman, and Asher Zugel, on winning the race with their boat, Sir Mix-A-Yacht, which weighed 32 pounds – fast rowing there! They received a trophy and bragging rights.

Congrats also to teams She’s the Ship, NAY, Usain Boat, Doritos Loco Team, The GOAT, Lil’ Yachty, and Sir Artemis McLeannand, on a job well done! Go, Knights!

What is technology and data security?

Schools rely on secure, reliable technology to support teaching and learning, but this doesn't just mean screens.

Systems across the district use technology tools that are relied on for ongoing operations, like transportation routes, attendance, medical records and allergies, payroll and utilities, family communications, and student data.

The wiring and electricity in many of our buildings were not built to support today's technology needs. Learn more about how the November 3 bond supports technology and data security across our district.

Columbia Elementary School kicked off Walktober with a joyful community walk on Wednesday from the Mukilteo Library to school! Dozens of students, staff, neighbors, local police and district staff joined in the fun, celebrating the start of a month-long focus on walking, biking and rolling to school. 🚶🏾‍♀️🚶🏻‍♂️.🚵

Big shoutout to Columbia PE teacher Hazel Beiermann for organizing the event and inspiring safe, active travel while helping kids build healthy habits early on.

Roofs. Heating. Plumbing. Fire alarms. Elevators.

Not the parts of a school anyone thinks about, until they stop working. When a 50-year-old boiler fails in winter or a pipe bursts in a hallway, the district pays emergency rates to patch a system that needs replacing.

The capital bond would replace aging building systems in our oldest schools, including fire alarms and elevators that no longer meet current codes.
