If you are reading this on a Monday morning and you need somewhere to go, the application takes about ten minutes and you can do the whole thing from a phone.

https://agapesoberhomes.managebuilding.com/Resident/rental-application/new

What happens next. We read it, we call you, and we tell you where you stand. Beds fill in the order people apply, qualify and complete approval. I will not tell you a bed is yours before it is, and you should be suspicious of anybody who does.

What you get if it works out: a furnished bed in a shared room in Everett, utilities on, a house manager, chores, house meetings, drug testing and a curfew. For men in recovery.

That is the whole offer. Written down it sounds small. At seven on a Monday morning, when the alternative is somebody's couch, it is not small at all.

A sober home is not treatment. It is worth saying plainly, because the two get confused constantly and the confusion costs people time they do not have.

Treatment is clinical. Detox, inpatient, outpatient, counselling, medication. That is care, delivered by clinicians.

A sober home is housing. A bed in a house with rules. No substances, chores, house meetings, drug testing, a curfew, and other men in the same position down the hall. There is no clinician on staff here. We are not a program and we do not claim to be one.

That combination is the whole point. People finish thirty days of treatment and go back to the same room in the same apartment with the same people, and the thirty days evaporates. A sober home is somewhere else to go.

Families ask whether they can see the house before their son moves in. The answer is yes, and it is always yes.

940 Broadway, Everett, Monday to Friday, nine to five. Call first so somebody is there, and we will walk you through a house. The rooms. The kitchen. Where the chore list is on the wall. What the curfew actually is, rather than what a website says it is.

Some families come without the person who would be living there. That is fine, and it is often the right order.

What will not happen on that tour is a promise of a bed. Beds go in the order people apply, qualify and complete approval, and nobody can tell you today who will be ready on Friday. Better to hear that standing in a hallway than to read it later in small print.

If you work in detox, inpatient, a drug court, a reentry program or a hospital discharge desk in or around Everett, here is the whole thing in two sentences. We run structured sober housing for men in recovery. People apply online, and beds go in the order applicants apply, qualify and complete approval.

What we will not do: promise you a placement, or offer you anything of value for a referral. If a house offers you something for sending people, that tells you what it is.

What we will do: answer the phone, and tell you honestly where someone stands.

Local employers who hire people with a record, and property owners thinking about leasing to a local charity, write to me directly and we will talk.

People ask what running five sober homes actually involves, and the honest answer is that most of it is logistics.

A dryer quits. Forty minutes on hold with the gas company. Somebody needs a ride to an appointment and there is nobody else to drive. Three calls in a morning asking whether a bed is open.

None of that goes in a grant application. All of it is the job.

The part people picture - the house meetings, the structure, the accountability - only runs because somebody chased the dryer and the gas company first. Heat on in October. Beds made. Phone answered.

Five houses in Everett, for men in recovery.

One ask this week, and it is the least inspiring thing we buy.

Drug test cups. About $3.50 each. Thirty-five dollars covers ten.

Here is why I am asking for this instead of something that sounds better. Random testing is what makes every other rule in the house real. Without it, the rules are a laminated sheet on a wall. With it, every man can take it for granted that the man in the next room is keeping to the same terms, and that assumption is the actual thing we provide. It is also the hardest thing we have to raise money for, because a cup is not a story and nobody wants their name on a box of them.

Five houses get through them steadily, and the cupboard has to never be empty. Testing that only happens in the weeks there is money for it is not random, and everybody in the house works that out inside a fortnight.

Thirty-five dollars. Ten cups. If you have been meaning to give something and wanted to know exactly where it lands, it lands there.

The house rules, and why each one is there. People read them as discipline. They are mostly arithmetic.

No alcohol or drugs in the house, and random testing to back it up. That is not a moral position. One man using puts every other man in that house back at the start, and they all know it, which is why the testing matters more to them than it does to me.

House meetings, attended. The point is not the agenda. The point is that everybody has had to be in the same room recently and say something out loud.

Chores on a list with names next to them. A kitchen nobody owns is a kitchen nobody cleans, and a dirty kitchen is the first thing to go before everything else starts going.

A curfew, and you tell the house manager if you will be out. Not because anybody is a child. Because if a man does not come home and nobody knows where to start looking, that is a different kind of night.

Fees weekly, in advance. And if something goes wrong with work, come and say so before the week you cannot pay, not after it.

Short list. Not negotiable. The whole thing only works if every man in the house can take it for granted that the others are keeping to it.

Beds are open in Everett.

Structured sober housing for men in recovery. A furnished shared room, utilities inside the weekly fee, a house manager, written house rules, chores, house meetings and random drug and alcohol testing. The application is online and takes about ten minutes.

Two things I will say plainly, because I would rather disappoint somebody now than in a fortnight. Beds fill in the order men apply, qualify and complete approval, so applying does not guarantee a placement. And we are not a treatment programme. If what a man needs this week is detox or clinical care, we are the wrong door, and helplinema.org is the right one.

If you are the man reading this, rather than somebody reading it on his behalf. It takes ten minutes. The call afterwards is to fill in whatever the form missed, not to talk you into anything.

Since we ask people for money, here is what you can check about us without having to ask us.

We are a Massachusetts 501(c)(3). The EIN is 41-2740196, and that number lets you look us up on the IRS exempt organisations list and read the filings yourself. We hold a Candid Silver Seal of Transparency, which is not an award, it only means somebody sat down and filled in the public profile honestly. Our SAM.gov registration is active.

And here is what we are not, because people assume otherwise when a website looks organised. We are not a treatment programme. We do not provide clinical care or case management. We are not MASH certified. I would rather write that on a Sunday than have somebody discover it later and wonder what else was left out.

Five houses. Fifty-six beds. Men in recovery. Everett.

Three questions families ask me on the phone, and the honest answers.

Can you hold a bed until Thursday. No. Beds fill in the order men apply, qualify and complete approval, and if I held one for you I would be holding it against somebody who applied before you. I know that is not what anybody wants to hear on a Saturday morning.

Will you tell me how he is doing. No, and you should be wary of anywhere that says yes. He is an adult and what he tells you is his to tell. What I will talk to you about is the house. The rules, the fee, the testing, what happens when a rule gets broken.

Is it safe. Come and look. 940 Broadway in Everett, Monday to Friday, nine to five. Call or text 617-888-3581. Walk through a house on a day nobody tidied it for you, and bring him if he will come.

There is a fourth question that almost nobody asks, and it is the one I would ask. What happens if he loses his job in January and cannot pay the fee that week. Ask that everywhere you look, not only here. The answer tells you what kind of place you are standing in.
