Have you noticed Ashley Creek looking rather green and slimy this season and asked yourself…is that normal?? 🤢 Yeah, so have we.

Flathead Conservation District Flathead Conservation District reported a potential harmful algal bloom to Montana DEQ and then collected samples of the green blobs and floating mats to check it out. Thanks to our partners at Flathead Lake Biological Station Flathead Lake Bio Station for helping us identify the samples. The green mats are Pithophora, AKA horsehair or cotton candy algae, a native filamentous green algae, and the little green balls are Wolffia columbiana, AKA watermeal or rootless duckweed.

These are non-toxic but excessive growth indicates high levels of nutrient pollution.
