Last week, Exeter witnessed history with the Gundalow Company's Piscataqua sailing up the Squamscott River to Exeter for the first time. While previous gundalows from Portsmouth have made it up in the early 2000's, it was the Piscataqua's maiden voyage this far inland.

Exeter's America 250 Celebration Commission worked with Gundalow Company to bring the ship to Exeter Harbor, connecting Exeter with its maritime heritage and the nation's founding.

Gundalows allowed early settlers to import and export goods, making life in Exeter possible. These flat bottomed boats could go in and out with the tides, resting on the mudflats in between.

They even played a role in the American Revolution when residents from the Seacoast raided Fort William and Mary in Portsmouth, stealing weapons and barrels of gunpowder. The stolen supplies found their way onto gundalows and were whisked away by the patriots to places like Exeter's very own Powder House.

A huge thank you to the Gundalow Company and all of the other groups that made their visit possible. And thanks to all those who came out to welcome the ship to town, those that visited while it was here, and those that joined in the Farewell Flotilla to send the Piscataqua off.

🚧 ROADWAY & ROUNDABOUT IMPROVEMENT UPDATES 🚧

Several construction projects are scheduled throughout town over the coming weeks. Please plan ahead for construction activity, possible minor delays, and use caution when traveling through work zones.

🛣️ Brentwood Rd October 5-7 Road work will take place on Brentwood Rd near the Colcord Pond Bridge. Crews will be milling (grinding down) the existing pavement in preparation for paving.

🛣️ Columbus Ave: Following the completion of work on Brentwood Rd, construction crews will move to Columbus Ave to continue roadway improvements.

🛣️ Court St October 7-9: As part of preparations for upcoming paving operations, a contractor will be performing storm drain improvements on Court St between Front St and Elm St.

🔄 Roundabout Concrete Sealing October 5: Concrete sealing work will take place within the roundabout. To allow the sealant to cure properly and for public safety, pedestrians and motorists are asked to stay off all concrete surfaces during the work.

🔄💡 Roundabout Lighting Installation October 15: Lighting installation is scheduled within the roundabout. Equipment may be operating in and around the roadway while work is underway. The intersection will remain open to traffic, and flagging crews will be on site to safely direct vehicles through the work area. Motorists should expect occasional delays and use caution when traveling through the intersection.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as these important infrastructure improvements are completed.

The Select Board will hold the first of three public hearings related to a Paid Parking Pilot Program proposed for the downtown area tonight at 7 PM.

These public hearings are a chance for residents to ask questions or share comments related to the proposed amendments to the parking ordinance that would allow the paid parking pilot program. The hearings will be at 7 PM on September 28th, October 13th, and October 26th in the Nowak Room of the Town Offices located at 10 Front Street. To see the full public hearing notice, find the link in the comments.

At the September 14th, 2026 meeting of the Select Board, Town Planner Dave Sharples presented a proposal for a Paid Parking Pilot Program to address issues related to turnover and enforcement of parking. To hear the full discussion, find the meeting coverage from Exeter TV on the Agendas/Minutes page of the Town website.

In our effort to continue to provide community-based CPR and AED programs to give our local citizens the life-saving skills they may need in a medical emergency, we’re pleased to announce that our next "Heartsaver CPR/AED" class will be held on:

Tuesday, October 6th, from 9 A.M. to 12 p.m. at the fire station.

This one-night-only course is offered to the general public at no cost and is limited to 10 people. However, our classes typically have fewer than 10, which allows our instructor to provide more personalized training and hands-on opportunities.
Community training programs like this are critical because statistics show that when a sudden cardiac event is witnessed, early interventions such as CPR and AED use can double a person’s chances of survival.
Anyone interested in participating in our class can register using the link below:
