Attention: Suffolk County residents and business owners!

If your primary residence or business was damaged by the September 25–27 Nor’easter, submit a report through New York State’s Damage Self-Reporting Tool: https://on.ny.gov/3xLeNby

Examples of damage to report include:

* Floodwater inside a home or business, including damage to personal property, inventory, or equipment
* A tree striking a home or business
* Damage that makes a business unsafe to operate
* A home or business that is destroyed or a total loss

Damage to vehicles, fences, or retaining walls is not eligible for this report.

Please report damage even if you’re unsure how serious it is. Include photos if you can take them safely. Homeowners should also contact their insurance company.

This report helps officials document the storm’s impact and assess potential requests for federal assistance. It is not an application for financial assistance.

Is vegetation from your property approaching nearby power lines? Call a qualified removal service before the situation becomes an emergency. Encourage your neighbors to do the same. Vegetation in power lines can cause fires, create an electrocution hazard, and introduce other risks.

Stay far away from damaged utility lines, including ones that do not appear to be live. Report downed power lines to PSEGLI at 1-800-490-0075, and call 911 for any dangerous condition.

Air Quality Advisory – Wednesday, July 15

The Suffolk County Department of Health is advising residents that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Wednesday, July 15.

Wildfire smoke from northern Canada, combined with high temperatures, is expected to create unhealthy air conditions across the region.

If possible, limit strenuous outdoor activities, especially if you are:

• Young children
• Older adults
• Exercising outdoors
• Living with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions

If you experience eye, nose, or throat irritation, shortness of breath, or chest pain, contact your healthcare provider

Each July 4th, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.

Fireworks are illegal in Suffolk County. Be smart - leave fireworks to the professionals.

It's TACO Tuesday at FHFD!

In anticipation of the upcoming extreme heat, FHFD EMTs incorporated TACO — Tarp Assisted Cooling Oscillation — into this week's EMS training session. Our crew practiced deploying TACO to rapidly chill a patient experiencing heat stroke — an action that is critical for preventing long-term health effects.
