Contract talks in Seattle broke down this evening; please keep an eye on the Seattle Education Association page for more information.

The school district is proposing that they'd fund VEBA accounts for their members, at a rate of $10 a month. Here in Medical Lake, we're getting $100 a month into our VEBAs. Our contract is pretty good, but for it to be that much better than Seattle is kind of amazing.

Hi all,

Our hearts go out to everyone who has been touched by the Spokane Complex Fires. More than most, those of us here in Medical Lake know the heartbreak.

There's going to be a lot said in coming days about effective ways to donate to the survivors, but I want to hold up for you the work of the Foundation for Working Families through the Washington State Labor Council--when Grey Road hit us, it was Labor that was there for members of the MLEA and the PSE before the state government, federal government, Red Cross, or Salvation Army. One of the first phone calls I got after the fire was from our new WEA president Janie White recommending the FWF, and if you have any capacity to donate to them now I've got absolute faith in them to use the money to support our union brothers and sisters in one of their hardest moments.

Best wishes for these last few weeks of the Summer Break, and in Solidarity,

--Ryan--

Just a reminder that we'll have our annual Memorial Day Observance at the Cemetery off Thorpe Road this coming Monday at 9:30. It looks amazing after the cleanup this morning--thanks to all who helped!--and we'll have support from both the MLHS Junior ROTC kids and a bugler from the high school band. For those who need seating, please bring a chair.

Hi MLEA Members,

I'm here at the Convention Center for the second day of Representative Assembly . It's kind of an interesting one to be at, because for the first time in 7 years our current president Larry Delaney isn't on the ballot and we have three smart candidates to be the next WEA president.

The new business items (NBIs) and resolutions so far have been really on topic; we passed a really good one earlier today to help the ECEAP teachers not have to do so much paperwork to prove that they can actually teach preschool. This morning we had a speech from the Secretary/Treasurer of the Washington State Labor Council, and I was able to thank her publicly for the work they did to support our members after the Gray Road Fire. Tonight we're going to get deeper into the work of the beliefs of the union through debate on New Business Items, which can be some of the best work we do, or the worst, depending on the year. I'm feeling really good about the direction this year, though.

If you have any questions about the work we're doing down here this weekend please reach out--the agenda that we set at RA matters for where education will go in the state, and while giving up part of the Spring Break wasn't my first choice, it really was the only choice. Happy to be here!

With thanks,

--Ryan--

Hi friends,

If you're up to a little low-stress activism on the Friday to end Spring Break, please consider going to this webpage from the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS) and sending an email to Senators Murray and Cantwell to encourage them to protect Impact Aid. It means a lot to our schools here in Medical Lake!

Learn more about your Federal representatives & participate in the latest NAFIS advocacy campaigns & surveys through the NAFIS Action Network.

Hi friends,

I have a legislative ask for you.

The state has the School Construction Assistance Program (SCAP) to help school districts with their construction projects. It's a great program, but there's a formula they use to say "Do you REALLY need more space?" that takes into account all the school buildings that a school district has, and for us in Medical Lake that's complicated because of Michael Anderson Elementary--it's got a ton of capacity that we can't really use, because bussing kids from outside the fence to the base is a security and logistics nightmare.

SSB 5901 would fix that by excluding schools on military installations from the SCAP formula. It's already passed out of the State Senate and has a hearing in the House Capital Budget Committee this coming Thursday morning; if you'd be willing to follow this link and sign in PRO for the bill, it could really help.

Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for considering,
