Last week, when Hurricane Isais was upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane, it was the first hurricane of the Atlantic Hurricane Season (June 1 to November 30). The last time our coast had its first hurricane as late as October was over 100 years ago, in 1905.

The weather is full of surprises, so make sure your homes are prepared for natural disasters if they do ever hit our County.

Today, I had the opportunity to testify at a congressional shadow field hearing here in Fairfax County and share how we administer elections in the largest jurisdiction in Virginia. Our Office of Elections and thousands of election officers do an incredible amount of work to ensure our elections are secure, accessible, and professionally administered, and I appreciated the opportunity to highlight that work and our experience at the local level. If you missed today’s hearing, you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctzmwgprL6U

Strong communities are built through strong partnerships, and for 30 years Rising Hope has brought together faith communities, nonprofits, volunteers, and neighbors to support those in need. Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to celebrate this milestone and present a Fairfax County Board of Supervisors resolution recognizing Rising Hope’s three decades of service. Congratulations to everyone who has helped build and sustain this important community partner over the years.

Today is National Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Recognition Day, a time to honor the servicemembers who were held as prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action. Here in Fairfax County, where so many servicemembers, veterans, and military families call home, this day carries special meaning. As the POW/MIA flag flies across Virginia today, we remember their service and sacrifice, stand with the families who continue to wait for answers, and reaffirm that they will never be forgotten.

Today, the Board of Supervisors took action on two issues that have generated significant concern and engagement from our community. On school transportation safety, we approved funding to restore crossing guards at 10 Fairfax County high schools for the remainder of the school year. The Board also took steps to strengthen our review and oversight of Flock Safety technology, including pausing the installation of new stationary license plate readers while we conduct further review. Read more about both of these actions and what comes next in my latest newsletter:

Twenty-five years ago today, September 11 forever changed our country and the meaning of public service for a generation of Americans. This morning, I joined our public safety leaders at Fairfax County Public Safety Headquarters and offered remarks reflecting on how that day shaped our lives and our commitment to serving others. We remembered the lives lost, honored the first responders who answered the call, and reaffirmed our responsibility to never forget.
