This page gives residents the resources to act before it does.

Virginia's Flood Risk Map only shows if your address sits in a mapped high-risk area. Flooding can happen anywhere, not just those zones. Nearly a third of claims come from outside mapped areas, so ask your agent about coverage either way.

Sunset comes earlier now, and standing water is harder to judge in low light. A flooded road can look like just a wet one until your headlights are close. Slow down on unfamiliar roads after dark, and never drive through standing water, regardless of how clear it looks.

Getting your car ready for trunk-or-treat means checking more than the candy bowl. Rain in fall behaves differently than rain in summer. Long stretches of steady rain soak the ground, so water backs up slowly instead of all at once. Familiar NoVA roads can surprise you this time of year. Water always finds the path of least resistance. Make sure that path doesn't lead straight to your home's foundation.

✓ Clear gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris.
✓ Confirm the ground slopes away from the foundation.
✓ Extend downspouts at least four feet from the house.

Your gutters won't stay clear for long this month. Leaves keep falling, soil's still soaked from summer, and October brings the kind of slow, steady rain that clogs things fast. No wonder water backs up faster than it did in July. Schedule a time to clean out your gutters again before the next system rolls through.
