Congratulations to the Fairfield Police Cadets on earning First Place Overall at this year’s NERLEEA Tactical Challenge!

The competition brought together Police Cadet teams from across the region to participate in challenging, scenario-based events designed to test their knowledge, teamwork, communication, and ability to apply their training in realistic situations.

In addition to earning First Place Overall, Fairfield placed in three individual events:

1st Place – High Risk Arrest Warrant
Cadets Michael, Benessy, Eli, Karen, Carmen, and Connor

1st Place – Narcotics Search Warrant
Cadets Connor, Eli, Benessy, Alwayne, Patrick, and Karen

Communication is an important part of leadership, and sometimes the best way to practice is simply by getting to know someone new!

During a recent meeting, Fairfield Police Cadets practiced their interview and communication skills by sitting down with some of the program’s newest cadets. The exercise gave experienced cadets an opportunity to practice asking questions, actively listening, carrying a conversation, and learning more about their newest teammates.

For the new cadets, it was also an opportunity to meet other members of the program and begin building connections within the team.

Exercises like this may seem simple, but strong communication skills are valuable in law enforcement, leadership roles, job interviews, and everyday life.

Take a look at some of the local Fairfield businesses helping support this year’s Fairfield Police Cadets Car Show by contributing prizes to our raffle.

Every donation helps make this community event possible while raising money for the Fairfield Police Cadet Program. As a reminder, our program is 100% funded through donations and fundraising and does not receive public funding from the Town of Fairfield or the Fairfield Police Department.

We are grateful to the businesses that have already stepped up to support our cadets, and we look forward to recognizing even more as we get closer to the Car Show on September 19 at Ludlowe High School!

After a month-long promotional process, the Fairfield Police Cadet Program is proud to announce the promotions of Cadet Sergeant Rodney and Cadet Lieutenant Davis!

The promotions were announced at our recent Open House, giving prospective cadets and their families an opportunity to see firsthand the leadership opportunities available within the program.

Both cadets worked through challenging promotional processes designed to test their knowledge, leadership, communication, and ability to perform under pressure. Their hard work and preparation earned them the opportunity to take on greater leadership responsibilities within the program.

Cadet Sergeant Rodney and Cadet Lieutenant Davis will be formally sworn into their new ranks during the program’s annual awards ceremony in January.

Congratulations to both, and welcome to your new roles!

Cadet Lieutenant candidates face a different challenge as part of their promotional process: a tabletop leadership exercise.

During the exercise, candidates are placed in command of a simulated event or incident and presented with a series of situations they must manage as they unfold. Candidates are expected to prioritize problems, delegate responsibilities, maintain accountability of cadets under their supervision, communicate effectively, and recognize when a situation requires the involvement of an advisor or other resources.

Just like real-world supervision, new information and unexpected problems are introduced throughout the exercise, requiring candidates to think on their feet and adjust their plans as circumstances change.

The tabletop is designed to evaluate more than whether a candidate can find the "right" answer. It gives Cadet Lieutenant candidates an opportunity to demonstrate judgment, decision-making, communication, leadership, and their ability to manage multiple responsibilities at the same time.

Exercises like this also give cadets experience with the types of scenario-based assessments they may encounter later in law enforcement promotional processes and other leadership positions.

When there is an opening within the Fairfield Police Cadet rank structure, a promotional process similar to that used by a police department is initiated.

Cadet Sergeant candidates begin by taking a written examination based on lessons and training they have received throughout the previous year, with no study guide provided. Candidates then submit a resume and cover letter, both of which are graded, before participating in an oral board conducted by a panel of officers who are unfamiliar to them. The goal is to closely simulate the type of competitive hiring process they may experience when applying to become a police officer.

To prepare, cadets receive instruction on resume and cover letter writing, interview etiquette, and oral board preparation, along with opportunities to participate in practice interviews.

This process is extremely valuable because it exposes youth members to professional expectations in a structured environment while giving them the opportunity to build confidence, communication skills, preparation habits, and experience performing under pressure. Even for cadets who ultimately choose a career outside of law enforcement, these are skills that can carry over into college admissions, job interviews, internships, and other competitive opportunities.

A special thank you to Officer Fortunato of the Trumbull Police Department, Officer Cetti of the Bridgeport Police Department & Bridgeport Police Cadets , and Detective Griffin and Officer Robledo of the Fairfield Police Department - Connecticut for volunteering their time to serve as panelists for this year’s oral board. Having officers from multiple departments participate helps provide candidates with an authentic interview experience while introducing them to perspectives from outside the Cadet Program.
