Fire Prevention Week 2026 - Do You Know How To Use A Fire Extinguisher?

Knowing how to properly use a fire extinguisher is essential in case of an emergency. A helpful way to remember the steps is the acronym P.A.S.S.:

1. Pull the ring.
2. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
3. Squeeze the handle.
4. Sweep the nozzle from side to side, targeting the fire.

It is important that all family members are familiar with what to do if a fire occurs. Create a floor plan of your home that shows at least two exits from every room, and make a separate drawing for each floor. Check that all windows and doors open easily and are wide and tall enough for quick escape.

Choose a safe meeting place outside your home where everyone can gather after leaving the building. Practice alerting other family members during fire drills. Consider keeping a bell and flashlight in each bedroom to assist with early warnings.

The Fairfield Community Fire Company will host an Open House on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Visitors can enjoy refreshments, fire truck rides, and a variety of family-friendly activities.

Fire Prevention Week 2026 - Fire Safety Tips

This information is provided by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For more details about this organization, visit: https://www.nfpa.org/about-nfpa/press-room/reporters-guide-to-fire/key-fire-safety-tips

Key Fire Safety Tips: Many home fires can be prevented.

Watch your cooking: Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you need to leave, even briefly, turn off the stove.

Give space heaters space: Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Smoke outside: Encourage smokers to smoke outdoors. Provide sturdy, deep ashtrays for cigarette disposal.

Keep matches and lighters out of reach: Store matches and lighters up high, out of reach of children, ideally in a cabinet with a child lock.

Inspect electrical cords: Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or loose connections.

Be careful with candles: Keep candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn. Make sure to blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Have a home fire escape plan: Create a home fire escape plan and practice it at least twice each year.

Install smoke alarms: Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Interconnect smoke alarms, so when one sounds, they all sound.

Test smoke alarms: Test alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly or when you hear a low-battery “chirp.” Replace any smoke alarm that is over 10 years old.

Install sprinklers: If you are building or remodeling your home, install residential fire sprinklers. Sprinklers can control and possibly extinguish a fire faster than the fire department can arrive.

REMINDER: Fairfield Community Fire Company Open House is scheduled for October 18, 2026. Make plans to attend this free family friendly event. More information will be available soon.

Fire Prevention Week - October 4, through October 10, 2026

The Fairfield Community Fire Department is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to support Fire Prevention Week, taking place October 4-10. The initiative highlights the role of safe charging practices in preventing lithium-ion battery fires. Every individual can help prevent these incidents by making wise choices every time they charge an electronic device.

Key Focus: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

The 2026 campaign highlights the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries found in everyday electronics like smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and power tools.

Essential Safety Rules
• Use Approved Equipment: Always use the manufacturer-approved charger and cord that came with your specific device.
• Hard Surfaces Only: Charge devices on flat, hard surfaces (like a table or desk) rather than soft surfaces like beds, couches, or under pillows where heat can trap.
• Unplug When Full: Remove devices from the charger once they reach a full charge.
• Outdoor Charging: Charge larger e-mobility devices (e-bikes and scooters) outdoors and away from primary exit paths.
• Discontinue Use: Stop using a device immediately if it becomes overly hot, begins swelling, emits smoke, or gives off a strange odor.
