FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH ON I-80 WESTBOUND

SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. On October 22, 2026, at approximately 2:34 a.m., Solano Area CHP officers responded to a reported vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash on Interstate 80 westbound at the I-780 interchange. Upon arrival, emergency personnel determined the pedestrian, a 71-year-old male from Vallejo, had sustained fatal injuries.

Officers contacted the driver of the involved Tesla, a 26-year-old male from San Francisco, who was cooperative and remained at the scene. The driver stated the vehicle was being operated in Full Self-Driving (FSD) autonomous mode at the time of the crash.

The crash was captured in its entirety on the Tesla's dash camera, and the driver provided the footage to officers on the scene.

A preliminary review of the video showed the Tesla traveling in the #2 lane at approximately 70 MPH when the pedestrian entered the freeway from the right shoulder. The pedestrian began crossing toward the center divide, stepping directly into the path of the Tesla. The video showed the Tesla’s brakes being applied as the vehicle steered to the left in an effort to avoid the pedestrian. Despite these evasive actions, the right front portion of the Tesla struck the individual.

Following the initial impact, it appears the pedestrian was struck by at least one additional vehicle while lying in the traffic lanes. No other vehicles stopped at the scene, and the identity of any subsequent involved vehicle or driver is currently unknown.

The Solano Area CHP is actively investigating this incident. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information regarding the other vehicles involved is encouraged to contact the Solano Area CHP office.

The Solano Area CHP extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

FATAL CRASH ON WESTBOUND INTERSTATE 80 NEAR CORDELIA SCALES
FAIRFIELD, Calif. —

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Solano Area is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Vacaville man early this morning on Interstate 80.

On October 18, 2026, at approximately 2:52 a.m., the CHP Golden Gate Communications Center received an automated iPhone crash notification indicating an incident on westbound I-80, near the Cordelia Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility (CVEF) scales.

Solano Area CHP officers were dispatched and arrived on scene at approximately 3:01 a.m. Upon arrival, officers located a silver 2014 Hyundai Elantra that had crashed into a tree just west of the CVEF.

The solo occupant of the vehicle, a 23-year-old male resident of Vacaville, was found trapped in the driver’s seat. He was unresponsive, not breathing, and had no pulse. Officers immediately began performing CPR until the Fairfield Fire Department arrived on scene.

Fire personnel successfully extricated the driver from the wreckage and transported him to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield. Despite all life-saving efforts, the driver was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at 3:27 a.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates the Hyundai was traveling westbound on I-80 when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver allowed the vehicle to veer off the right side of the freeway, resulting in a severe front-end crash into a tree. It does not appear the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in this crash; however, official toxicology results are pending. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Solano County Coroner’s Office following proper notification of next of kin.

The Solano Area CHP is actively investigating this incident. Any witnesses or individuals with information regarding the events leading up to the crash are urged to contact the Solano Area CHP office.

The California Highway Patrol, Solano Area, extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the young man lost in this tragic crash.

CHP Officers Injured and 19-Year-Old Driver Fatally Injured in Separate Crashes on Interstate 80 in Solano County.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers from the Solano Area office responded to the scene of an initial major crash on eastbound Interstate 80, just west of Air Base Parkway. In that initial crash, a 19-year-old male from San Pablo driving a 2007 Honda Civic lost control for unknown reasons and was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 47-year-old male from Sacramento.

The driver of the Civic was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The crash is still under investigation.

At approximately 11:46 p.m. four officers were utilizing three CHP patrol vehicles with their emergency lights activated. Lanes 1, 2, 3, and 4 were closed, and traffic was being diverted into the slow lane. While two officers were seated inside a Dodge Charger patrol vehicle, a Tesla driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man drove through the flare and cone pattern and struck the CHP vehicle.

Both officers inside sustained injuries and were transported to Northbay Hospital in Fairfield and have since been released.

It is unknown at this time whether the vehicle's Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature was active.

The CHP's Golden Gate Division Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene, and all traffic was diverted off to Air Base Parkway. All lanes were reopened around 8:30 a.m.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information regarding both crashes will be released as it becomes available.
