Huge shout out to Gulf Coast Grubs for donating these wonderful isopod enclosures to our Little Roots crew! 🌿🐛

Our kiddos love learning about decomposers and the important role they play in our ecosystems. And of course, what kid doesn’t love roly-polies?!

We had so much fun exploring our new enclosures today! We’re so excited to collaborate with Gulf Coast Grubs and bring even more hands-on learning opportunities to our little naturalists.

Thank you guys so much for thinking of us and making today extra special for our kiddos! 💚

There are thousands of species of mushrooms in Alabama. Some even glow in the dark! We always have so much fun looking at the different parts of the mushroom, learning how they spread their spores and what conditions they like best.

We found a smooth ox beetle today, and of course everyone wanted a turn being very still and gentle with our new little forest friend. 🪲

Smooth ox beetles are a type of rhinoceros beetle. They may look big and tough, but they are harmless and a little clumsy. The kids loved feeling its smooth shell and watching its strong little legs move.

The best science lessons are often the ones that crawl right up to us in the forest!

We built a boat today! First we had to find a big log that would float, then we had to make a sail so that the boat would catch wind and continue on its journey. We had to use a lot of team work and a little bit of trial and error but we did it! 🛶

Did you know camphor and beautyberry leaves can be used to make natural insect repellent? 🌿🦟

Camphor is invasive and grows throughout our local forests, so our Homeschool Conservation Science class learned how removing it can support the ecosystem while also putting the leaves to good use. We combined camphor and beautyberry leaves with alcohol to extract their useful plant compounds. Now our mixture will sit in a dark place for a few weeks before becoming bug spray we made ourselves!

I love learning useful skills, local ecology, and cool nature science with this crew.

Homeschool Conservation Science meets Wednesdays from 12:00 to 3:00 for ages 8 and up. We have spots available!
