Twenty-five years ago today, September 11, 2001, our nation changed forever.
Nearly 3,000 lives were taken that day. Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, coworkers, police officers, EMS providers, and 343 members of the FDNY who answered the call and never returned home.
Those firefighters knew exactly what they were running toward. While thousands were trying to escape the smoke, fire, and destruction, they were climbing the stairs.
That is a sacrifice the fire service will never forget.
Today, the members of the Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department pause to remember every life lost on 9/11, every family forever changed, and every first responder who ran toward danger when others desperately needed help.
We also remember the days that followed, when Americans put differences aside, stood together, prayed together, flew our flag proudly, and reminded the world what it meant to be one nation.
A quarter-century has now passed. Some serving in the fire service today were not even alive when the towers fell. But the responsibility to remember has been handed to us.
We will tell their stories.
We will honor their sacrifice.
We will remember their courage.
And we will never forget.
May God continue to comfort the families who carry the scars of that day, bless the men and women who serve our communities and our nation, and bless the United States of America.
🇺🇸WE WILL NEVER FORGET! 🇺🇸
