October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The 3 R's for stopping domestic violence are Recognize, Respond, and Refer.
Recognize
✅Spot the warning signs and indicators of abuse.
✅Understand that abuse is not just physical; it includes emotional, verbal, financial, and psychological control.
✅Look for signs like fear, sudden isolation from friends or family, or strict control over money and movement.
Respond
✅Talk privately and listen without judgment if someone shares their experience.
✅Believe the victim and let them know they are not alone and that the behavior is not their fault.
✅Prioritize safety; if an immediate emergency or violent act is happening, call 911.
Refer
✅Provide contact information for professional support services, local shelters, or hotlines.
✅Avoid forcing a person to take action before they feel ready, but offer practical connections to help.
✅Share resources like the National Domestic Violence Hotline for confidential support.
