We had a great time visiting the school today for Fire Prevention Week!
With lithium-ion batteries in so many everyday devices—from phones and tablets to toys—we wanted to talk to the kids about how to handle and charge them safely. Members of our department gave a presentation on battery safety and put together a quick demonstration to show what happens during thermal runaway. Using a sealed baking soda and vinegar reaction, we showed how rapid gas buildup and internal pressure can cause a battery casing to fail and pop. It gave the students an easy, visual way to see why damaged batteries can be dangerous.
Afterward, the kids came outside to check out the trucks, see our gear, and ask plenty of questions. Before they left, we handed out goody bags with some safety info for them to take home to their families.
Thank you to the school, staff, and students for having us out today!
