Cybersecurity is an important part of emergency preparedness.

Cyber incidents can disrupt essential services, compromise sensitive information, and affect a program’s ability to maintain operations. Emergency management programs should include cyber risks in risk assessments, emergency operations plans, and continuity-of-operations planning.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This month, take time with your team to review your organization's plans, identify potential gaps, and consider how your program would respond to a cyber incident. For programs pursuing or maintaining EMAP accreditation, this is also an opportunity to review existing plans, evaluate capabilities, and identify areas for improvement.

CISA has put together helpful cybersecurity resources for practical guidance to help strengthen your program’s cyber resilience. Explore them and more here: https://ow.ly/3Mox50ZWmzi

What happens between assessments matters, and accreditation is one point in a program’s journey. The real work continues through training, exercises, corrective actions, evaluation, and lessons learned.

Each of these provides an opportunity to identify gaps, strengthen capabilities, and make meaningful improvements. Continuous improvement doesn't happen only in preparation for an assessment. It happens throughout the year.

What is your program doing to keep improving?
