One small practice changed how we talk at home.

Every night before the lights go out, my wife and I each say one thing we appreciated that day.

Not a lecture. Not a problem to solve. Just one honest thing.

Some nights it comes easy. Other nights it takes a minute. But that minute softens a long day, and it reminds us we're on the same team even when we're tired.

It sounds small. That's the point. A marriage is mostly made of small things done well.

That practice, and the ones around it, live in "For Better and Worse" if you want the full picture. https://randyjsmith.gumroad.com/l/ForBetterandWorse

I didn't plan to become a writer. I planned to survive.

Sitting in a Fargo ICU with stage 4 cancer, I wasn't thinking about books. I was wondering if I'd see another sunrise.

Somewhere between the fear and the quiet, I started writing. Not because I had all the answers. Because I needed to process the questions.

That's where everything I write comes from. Not a credentials page. Just a guy who's been on a long, hard road and decided to leave honest notes for anyone walking the same one.

Thirty-four years of marriage taught me the rest. Storm after storm, one promise held.

If you're in a season that feels impossible, small steps are still steps. You don't need a perfect plan. You need one honest move forward.

The guides are waiting whenever you're ready. Link in bio.

The strongest marriages I know aren't the ones that look perfect. They're the ones that kept their promise on the hard days.

Mine almost didn't.

Thirty-four years ago I made a vow. For better, for worse. I didn't know how much "worse" would mean. Cancer. Financial strain. Nights when "in love" was the last thing we felt.

But a promise made before God and family doesn't get to quit because feelings fade. We learned to talk when we didn't want to. To forgive before we felt ready. To stay when staying was hard.

That's not a lecture. That's a life I lived.

"For Better and Worse" is what carried us through, written down for $10. If your marriage is in a hard season, you're not alone and you're not done.

Some days I still can't believe I'm here.

I sat in a Fargo ICU not knowing if I'd see another sunset.

Stage 4 cancer rearranges your priorities real fast. When I came through it, I didn't run out and build a fancy program. I started writing.

Not because I had all the answers. Because I'd lived through enough hard questions to know what actually helps.

The guides I write aren't polished. They're honest. They're what I wish someone had handed me when I was exhausted, scared, and trying to hold it all together.

Thirty-four years of marriage taught me the same thing about love. What lasts isn't perfection. It's showing up.

If you've ever felt like life handed you too much at once, you're exactly who I write for.

The guides are at the link in my bio. Grab one. See if it feels like a friend talking, not a textbook.

Your marriage deserves better than whatever your brain replays at 2 a.m.

Here's a practice that helped us. Once a day, I write down the things pressing on my mind, plus one next step for each. Then I close the notebook.

That way my worries don't leak into my half of the conversation at dinner. They're written down. They have a plan. I can actually be present with my wife instead of somewhere else in my head.

Call it a worry window for your relationship. Ten minutes a day so the rest of the day belongs to the people you love.

If you want the full rhythm of practices like this, they're all in "For Better and Worse."

Nobody teaches you how to stay married when staying is hard.

They hand you a wedding day, some flowers, and a hope that love is enough. And love is a start. But thirty-four years in, I can tell you this. Love shows up as a choice, made over and over, on the days it doesn't feel like anything at all.

I've lived "for better" and I've lived "for worse." Cancer. Money seasons. The quiet distance that creeps in between two tired people.

What kept us was small, honest things done daily. Talking before the silence hardened. Forgiving before the night ended. Praying when we couldn't find our own words.

That's what "For Better and Worse" holds. Real practices from a real marriage, written for $10 like a friend would tell you.

If your marriage needs a little more "better" right now, this is for you.

With all the static around us — the noise, the tension, the constant pull to react — it’s more important than ever to pause.

Step back.
Take a breath.
Just breathe.

In that space between reaction and response is where clarity lives. It’s where patience grows. It’s where we remember who we are and how we want to show up for each other.

The Pause Movement isn’t about ignoring the world. It’s about meeting it with intention. Pause first… then respond.

Do we really believe a social media post is going to change the direction of Minneapolis… or our government?

Is your keyboard magical?
Do your keys have some hidden power that suddenly fixes everything?

Probably not.

So why use it to spread hate?

If typing furiously actually solved problems, we’d be living in a different world by now. What does change things is how we treat people, how we show up in real life, how we listen, how we vote, how we raise our kids, and how we talk to each other when we disagree.

Words matter — but only when they’re used to build, not burn.

Before you hit “post,” maybe pause and ask:
Is this helping?
Is this healing?
Or is this just feeding the fire?

We don’t need louder keyboards.
We need calmer hearts.
Just… pause.

It’s Sunday.
What a perfect day to stop. To pause.

Before you react… ask yourself:
Why did that trigger me?
Is it worth my peace?

The news doesn’t deserve your joy.
Social media doesn’t get to steal your calm.
Anger doesn’t get to run your day.

Instead—post something positive.
Call that friend you’ve been meaning to.
Hug your kids a little tighter.
Sit in the quiet. Breathe.

You don’t have to respond to everything.
You don’t have to fire back.

Just pause.
That pause might be the most powerful thing you do today.

This extreme cold we’re living through right now… it makes you stop and think.

Maybe this is God’s way of saying enough.

Enough noise.
Enough chaos.
Enough division.

Slow down. Get back home. Take care of your business. Take care of your family. Raise respectful kids who know right from wrong. Love your neighbor even when you don’t agree with them.

We’ve gotten so busy pointing fingers and picking sides that we forgot what actually holds this country together—faith, family, responsibility, and respect.

The cold reminds us how small we really are… and how much we need each other.

Maybe it’s time to warm things back up—starting with our hearts, our homes, and the way we treat one another.

Stay safe. Stay humble. And maybe… just pause.
