The Farmington Fire Department would like to recognize Firefighter Kristopher Janke, Firefighter Joseph Furst, Firefighter Katelynn Jackson, and Firefighter Chase Pankow on successfully earning their NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Operator/Pumper Certification!

This certification represents much more than simply learning how to drive a fire truck. A Fire Apparatus Operator plays a critical role on the fireground, responsible for safely positioning the apparatus, operating the fire pump, establishing and maintaining an adequate water supply, and supporting the firefighters working at the scene.

The certification process included a 48-hour combination of classroom instruction, online learning, and hands-on skills training. Students were required to demonstrate proficiency in several areas, including:

🔹 Safe apparatus operation and driving – Learning how to safely maneuver large emergency vehicles, understand vehicle limitations, navigate roadways, and position the apparatus effectively at emergency scenes.

🔹 Pump panel operations – Spending extensive time at the pump panel learning how to monitor pressure, control multiple attack lines, manage tank-to-pump and hydrant operations, and make adjustments as conditions change.

🔹 Water supply operations – Understanding how to establish a reliable water supply from hydrants and other sources while maintaining the water necessary for crews operating inside a structure.

🔹 Fireground coordination – Learning how the apparatus operator supports the Incident Commander and interior crews by monitoring water supply, pump pressures, apparatus systems, and changing fireground conditions.

🔹 Hands-on practical skills – Applying classroom knowledge in realistic scenarios where students had to safely operate the apparatus and pump while managing multiple tasks simultaneously.

The apparatus operator is often working behind the scenes, but their job is essential to the success and safety of the entire fireground. When firefighters advance a hose line into a burning building, they rely on the apparatus operator to provide the right amount of water at the right pressure. A mistake at the pump panel can have a direct impact on the firefighters operating inside.

We are proud of the time and effort these four firefighters invested in completing this certification. Their continued education and willingness to take on additional responsibilities make our department stronger and help us provide a higher level of service to our community.

Congratulations FF Janke, FF Furst, FF Jackson, and FF Pankow! We are proud of your accomplishment and look forward to seeing you continue to put these skills to work serving the citizens of Farmington.

Train hard. Operate safely. Serve those in need.

Congratulations on Retirement and Thank You for Your Service, Lieutenant Jones.

Lieutenant Mark Jones joined the Farmington Fire Department in July 2019 and quickly demonstrated his commitment to growing his knowledge and skills while serving both the department and our community.

In 2022, he was honored as Firefighter of the Year and promoted to Crew Leader. The following year, he earned another promotion to Lieutenant, taking on the responsibility of leading his own squad. His continued growth and willingness to take on additional responsibilities demonstrated his commitment to both the department and the people we serve.

Throughout his time with the department, LT. Jones took on the responsibility of overseeing our radio and pager programming. He also stepped up to help develop and implement IT solutions for our annual Turkey Bingo event, building a team around the project and finding ways to make the process more efficient each year. His willingness to take on these responsibilities, find solutions, and help others has made a lasting impact on this department.

We truly appreciate everything you have given to this department and the people we serve. You have been an important part of our department family, and your presence will certainly be missed.

On behalf of myself and the entire Farmington Fire Department, thank you for your service, dedication, and commitment. I wish you and your family nothing but the very best in this next chapter of your lives. Thank you for everything you have done for the department and for the lasting impact you have made on those around you.

Firefighter Nicholas Read joined the Farmington Fire Department in July 2021 and, from the beginning, worked tirelessly to expand his knowledge, sharpen his skills, and become a better firefighter.

With a background in OSHA standards and a strong safety-conscious approach, FF Read brought valuable knowledge and perspective to our department. His involvement with the Fire Department’s Safety Committee demonstrated his commitment not only to his own safety, but also to the well-being of his fellow firefighters. His attention to detail, understanding of workplace safety, and willingness to identify opportunities for improvement helped strengthen our department’s safety culture.

Beyond his knowledge and skills, FF Read truly lived the Farmington Fire Department motto of “Serving Those in Need.” Whether responding to an emergency, helping a community member during a difficult time, or supporting his fellow firefighters, he consistently demonstrated a willingness to step forward and help others. His service was about more than simply answering the call; it was about making a difference for those who needed us most.

His dedication, hard work, and commitment to continuous improvement have made a lasting impact on our organization and the community we serve. The time and effort he invested in the department made a meaningful difference to his fellow firefighters and the community members whose lives he touched.

We wish Nicholas and his family nothing but happiness and success in the next chapter of their lives. Thank you, FF Read, for your service, your friendship, and for truly living the words “Serving Those in Need.” You have helped make the Farmington Fire Department a safer, stronger, and better organization, and for that, we are grateful.

What a night! Thank you to everyone who came out to the Open House last night. We loved seeing so many members of our community stop by, meet our firefighters, check out the equipment, ask questions and enjoy the evening with us. We couldn't have asked for a better evening together!

September 11, 2001, is a day that changed our country forever.

Twenty-five years later, the memories of that morning remain deeply etched into the hearts of millions of Americans. On that day, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands more were injured, and countless families, friends, first responders, survivors, and communities were forever changed.

But when we remember September 11th, we must remember more than the tragedy.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMS providers, military personnel, and ordinary citizens who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape it.

We remember the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We remember the passengers and crew of United Flight 93 who fought back and prevented an even greater tragedy.

We remember the families who received the phone calls no family should ever have to receive.

And we remember the thousands of survivors, first responders, rescue and recovery workers, volunteers, and community members whose lives were forever affected not only that day, but in the years that followed. The consequences of 9/11 continue to be felt today, including among those who became sick or lost their lives from illnesses connected to the attacks and their aftermath.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11th carries a particularly profound meaning.

It reminds us of what service, sacrifice, courage, and brotherhood truly mean. It reminds us why we answer the call, why we train, why we look out for the person beside us, and why we never forget the responsibility that comes with wearing the uniform.

Twenty-five years later, there are now millions of people who were not yet born or were too young to remember September 11, 2001. That makes our responsibility even greater.

We have to tell the story.
We have to remember the names.
We have to honor the sacrifice.
And we have to teach the next generation why we will never forget.

May we always remember the 2,977 who never made it home.

May we always honor those who ran toward the danger.

May we continue to care for those who are still carrying the physical and emotional scars of that day.

And may we never lose sight of the unity, compassion, courage, and service that emerged from one of the darkest days in our nation's history.

September 11, 2001 -25 years later.

🇺🇸 NEVER FORGET. 🇺🇸

May they rest in peace. May their families always be remembered. May their sacrifice never be forgotten.
