The caller ID says it’s your bank.

The person on the phone knows your name. They may even know where you bank. Then they tell you there’s suspicious activity on your account and they need your help to stop it.

It can sound very convincing.

The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that consumers lost $3.5 billion to imposter scams in 2025. Among business impersonation scams, bank impersonations resulted in the highest reported losses.

Next time a “bank employee” calls unexpectedly, you don’t have to continue the conversation just because the caller seems legitimate.

Hang up. Contact your bank using a number you trust. Then ask whether there’s an actual problem with your account.

A real bank employee will understand why you want to verify.
