October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for many of our members at South King Fire, the meaning behind wearing pink is deeply personal.

Pictured here is Captain Brad Chaney, a 19 year veteran of South King Fire, alongside his mother, a two time breast cancer survivor.

For Captain Chaney, wearing our new breast cancer awareness shirts represents much more than supporting a cause.

“After 19 years in the fire service, I’ve learned that strength and courage come in many forms. My mom has battled breast cancer twice, and I’ve seen firsthand the courage it takes to face that fight. Seeing my fire department recognize and support those affected by breast cancer means more to me than I can put into words. I’m proud to wear this shirt, but even prouder to stand beside my mom.”

This October, our members are wearing pink to honor survivors, remember those we have lost, and stand alongside those who are still fighting.

To everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer, know that you are not alone. Your South King Fire family stands with you. 🩷

When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
