At McKinley this month, Mr. George's and Mr. Griebe's classes met up for a fun craft day with mini-pumpkins and gourds!

Students each got to pick their own gourd and create a friendly monster out of it. Students had a blast exercising their creativity while using all kinds of craft materials (colored pom-poms, googly eyes, popsicle sticks, etc.)!

After finishing their creations, each class then wrote short stories about their friendly gourd monsters and shared them with their partners.

Mr. George's 1st graders and Mr. Griebe's 3rd graders try to pair up and do an interactive learning craftivity like this every few weeks and the students really enjoy it!

October brings PUMPKINS! Mrs. Schoeneck's Orange Team friends had a big problem. Their pumpkin was too big and heavy to carry. They had to do some Pumpkin Problem Solving. Together they figured out a way to get that big pumpkin safely into their classroom!

4th grade Prairie Science Class students helped with cutting willows out of the prairie. Although willows make great habitat for a variety of wildlife species, it is also considered an invasive plant that will crowd out prairie grasses and flowers.

Students learned the importance of "Keeping the Prairie a Prairie" and were able to use leather gloves, goggles and loppers to safely cut willows and remove them from the prairie.

TO GIVE AWAY:

Young Chang U-116S - Fair condition. 1530972, Manufactured late 1980s to early 1990s

Two hammers have loose center shanks, causing them to strike two pitches. Piano technicians say this is a fairly inexpensive fix. One black keytop (Ab7) missing, but key still playable. Pedals function as intended. Holds a tune and has no chipped keys. One bass string missing (Eb2), but still plays with the other string.

Overall, a good instrument for a beginning or intermediate student.

*** NOTE: Recipient is responsible for moving, loading, and transporting this piano. District staff will not be able to assist.

The first person to email Nick Larson at [email protected] will get the piano. If you do not hear back from him, you were not first. ***

This fall has been busy with the Work Based Learning program! We've had tours at the Hoot Lake solar plant, the YMCA, the SCR Foundry, and had guest speakers talk about public presentations and the art of small talk and personality traits in communication.

The students have all completed their OSHA 10 safety certification and have internship placements throughout town. We have students interning at Lake region Hospital, the YMCA, Innova Industries, Prairie Aviation, Bhava Beauty, Attitudes for Hair, LifeSmiles, FM Bank and John's Heating/Air Conditioning.

The class has also helped volunteer at the United Way's lunchbox packing event and helped wrap up Lake Region's Community Garden for the season.

Upcoming tours and guest speakers include the Fergus Falls Police Department, M-State, West Central Initiative, the Fergus Falls Airport and Lakes Country Service Cooperative.
