What would the world look like if q***r kids got to imagine it? 🪐

That's a question we're pretty excited to explore together.

Q***r Utopia is a FREE creative arts club at Affirmations where LGBTQ+ middle schoolers (ages 11–14) can make art, explore who they are, and spend time with other young people who get it.

And along the way, they'll get to dream up their own visions of a q***r utopia — a world that reflects what matters to them and all the possibilities they can imagine for themselves.

Because sometimes making art is about more than making something. It's about finding your voice and building connections. It's about getting to see what happens when you're free to be yourself.

The category is: movie night. 🎬

And this Thursday, we're bringing a little New York ballroom history into conversation with Detroit's own.

We're screening Paris Is Burning, Jennie Livingston's landmark documentary about the Black and Latinx ballroom scene of 1980s New York. And after the credits, we'll talk about it with a Detroit q***r icon who's spent decades helping shape ballroom culture right here in Michigan.

Jey’nce Poindexter has been part of Detroit's ballroom scene since the late '90s. She's a mother of the House of Mizrahi, a longtime trans and q***r advocate, and has helped LGBTQ+ young people find housing and support through her work at the Ruth Ellis Center.

One of the things that makes Paris Is Burning so powerful is what it shows us life beyond the runway. Houses aren't just about winning trophies and being fabulous. They're also about finding family, looking after one another, and building somewhere to belong when the world stops making much room for you.

We're really looking forward to hearing Jey’nce's perspective, talking about the film together, and making some room for the stories and experiences of Detroit's ballroom community.

We'll have fresh-popped popcorn, refreshments, and plenty to talk about. Come for the film, stay for the conversation. Bring a friend or just bring yourself.

Pride season isn't over just because the leaves are changing. 🍂

Youth Pride is taking over Affirmations on Saturday, November 14, and we're bringing a little fall festival energy inside the Center!

The q***r and trans young people on our Youth Advisory Council have been working on this for months. Youth Pride, by and for the young people it's here to celebrate.

Think drag performances, face painting, music, workshops, a gender-affirming clothing closet, fall snacks, freebies, and plenty of chances to connect with other young people and local youth organizations.

And because a 10-year-old and a 17-year-old probably have different ideas of a good Saturday, we're splitting the day into two sessions:

🍁 10 AM–12 PM | Ages 13 & under
🍁 1–5 PM | Ages 14–20

Come with your family, bring a friend, or make a few new ones while you're here. Whether it's your first time at Affirmations or you're already a familiar face, there's room for you.

A quick note for our younger crowd: Kids under 11 need to attend with a parent or guardian. Ages 11–13 can attend without an adult staying, but they'll need a signed parent/guardian permission form at check-in.

📍 Affirmations | 290 W. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale
💜 Free to attend!

Put November 14 on your calendar. We'll save you a snack. :)

OPULENCE! EVERYTHING IS YOURS!

Next up in the Affirmations Q***r Film Series: Paris Is Burning (1990).

Jennie Livingston’s landmark documentary takes us into New York City’s Black and Latinx ballroom scene of the ’80s. The houses, the categories, the reading, the voguing, the legendary house mothers. It's electric, sharp, heartbreaking, and full of people whose influence on q***r culture is still everywhere.

You know the quotes. Come spend some time with the people and stories behind them.

And we're especially excited about who'll be joining us after the film: Jey’nce Poindexter, Detroit ballroom legend, trans advocate, and iconic mother of the House of Mizrahi. She'll lead us in a conversation about the film, ballroom culture, and its legacy.

We'll have fresh-popped popcorn, refreshments, and a room full of people who actually want to talk about what they just watched. Nothing fancy. Just a little q***r cinema in Ferndale.

Take your most opinionated movie friend. Come solo. Bring the person who's never seen it but somehow knows every quote.

We went ahead and put “learn to vogue” on the calendar. 💙

Vogue has deep roots in Black and Latinx q***r + trans ballroom culture, and we’re especially excited to learn from Kyra, a Black trans woman and beloved part of Detroit’s ballroom community.

You genuinely do not need to know how to vogue. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try it, or maybe you just want to move around for a couple hours and learn something new with other q***r people. If you want to feel a little more connected to some of the roots of our q***r culture, that’s reason enough too.

Calling all poets, performers, and people who clap really loud. 🎤💜

Bridging Generations: Open Mic Night is back at Affirmations for Coming Out Week! We're bringing together q***r + trans voices across generations for an evening of music, poetry, storytelling, and whatever people feel inspired to share.

First time performing? Perfect. Not new to this, but true to this? Even better. Just want to cheer everybody on? We love an enthusiastic audience.

Your October to-do list. 💜

This month at Affirmations: an art exhibit + market celebrating neurodiverse artists, Q***r Yoga, a Vogue class, Paris Is Burning on the big screen, an all-ages Open Mic for Coming Out Week, free pizza, and probably at least one person saying, “Wait, I’ve been meaning to come here forever.”

Come look at art. Come move your body. Come watch q***r history. Come take the mic or simply nod encouragingly. Come eat pizza. Come exist outside your house with other q***r people.

It’s LGBTQ+ History Month! It’s Coming Out Week! It’s October! Let’s get spooky.

Pick a thing. Add it to your calendar. We’ll be here. :)
