Last Thursday evening, the Ferndale Police Department hosted the second week of the Citizens Academy. 🚓📔

The City of Oak Park Public Safety brought their K9 partner, Vader, who helps the Ferndale Police Department through mutual aid. Vader was very friendly and posed for photos!

Afterward, Lieutenant Bishop outlined the Oakland County SWAT Team's key responsibilities and equipment. Detective Goebel also reviewed past police cases and shared the important tools, steps, and effort needed to solve them.

Thank you to everyone in the Citizens Academy! We look forward to the next two weeks of the program. 🌟

The Ferndale Police Department's Citizen's Academy kicked off last Thursday, and it was a great first session! 👮

After group introductions and some shawarma sandwiches, Chief Emmi and Sgt. Blanchard gave an informative presentation on the ins and outs of our Police Department. Topics ranged from policing advancements and professional standards to annual reports and our community partners. The group asked many thoughtful questions and had an engaging discussion with the Chief and Sergeant. 💬

For the second half of the session, the group took an in-depth tour of the Police Department and its facilities. Thank you to all who participated, and we're looking forward to seeing you again this week! 😁

🚔 Annual Officer Training Underway 🚨

Over the next month, Ferndale Police officers will be completing their annual Response to Resistance training. This training includes:
• De-escalation techniques
• Response-to-resistance decision-making
• TASER training
• High-risk vehicle stops
• Reality-based scenario training

Officers are placed in realistic scenarios designed to challenge their decision-making and communication skills. The goal is to provide our officers with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to safely protect our community while working toward the best possible outcome in each situation. During these exercises, officers are trained to consider all available resources, including requesting assistance from a co-responder when appropriate, particularly when someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis.

At the Ferndale Police Department, we believe ongoing, realistic training is essential to maintaining the highest level of service and safety for our officers and the community we serve.

On Friday, September 18th, 2026, we were proud to represent the Ferndale Police Department in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Michigan! 🏃‍♀️🚓

This event is all about raising awareness and support for the incredible athletes of Special Olympics, whose determination and joy inspire us every day.

We received the torch from the Hazel Park Police Department in front of Jardon Vocational School, and passed it to the Royal Oak Police Department on Woodward Avenue to continue its journey. Thank you to the students, whose encouragement and cheers made the experience truly special, our neighboring Police Departments, and everyone else involved in making this event happen. 💙

The City of Ferndale is thrilled to announce a partnership with Oakland County Emergency Management to join the OakAlert system, which will now provide emergency alerts to Ferndale residents. The City of Ferndale is proud to be the first city in this pilot program, and City staff are very grateful to Oakland County for partnering with Ferndale!

Residents may sign up for this free system to receive alerts by text, email, app, or phone call. A Ferndale address is required to receive local alerts. Once enrolled, users can receive both Ferndale and County alerts. Each account can include several phone numbers, email addresses, and locations, making it suitable for families, multi-person households, and property owners.

This program is free for the City to participate in. The Communications Department, with support from the City Manager’s Office and the Fire, Police, and Public Works Departments, will use it as a primary crisis communications tool, alongside other existing platforms. The system is prepared for various crisis scenarios and will provide residents and staff with a swift, efficient way to communicate and receive information.
