🚨 ATTENTION 🚨

In anticipation of unfavorable weather conditions, North Lyon Fire is temporarily suspending open burning for all areas within the North Lyon County Fire Protection District, including within the City of Fernley for the following date:

- Friday October 23, 2026

This is in accordance with the terms outlined on the burn permits issued by North Lyon Fire, specifically, "This permit may be temporarily NULL AND VOID during suspension of burning by the District Fire Chief or his authorized representative."

With the predicted weather forecast for gusty winds from the US National Weather Service Reno Nevada, the Fire Chief has temporarily suspend open burning for the above-mentioned date.

Any person who violates the terms or conditions of burn permits shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and may be cited as such. The expense of responses to and suppression of any emergency incident that is the result of a violation of burn permits may be charged to the Responsible Party whose violation caused the response of equipment and personnel.

We anticipate rescinding the suspension Saturday morning, October 24, 2026 at 0500.

Please stay safe, and reach out to our business office with any questions or concerns.

You may also check the burn status on our website at www.northlyonfire.com. If the banner at the top of the page is red, it means burning is not authorized that day.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming some of our friends from Fernley Estates Senior Living to Station 61 for a special visit!

Our guests had the opportunity to tour the fire station, get an up-close look at some of our firefighting apparatus and equipment, and even check out the Battle Born Medevac helicopter stationed here at North Lyon Fire Station 61!

We also want to thank them for the meal that they brought our staff. The pulled pork sandwiches were delicious! And the apple crisp was a great touch.

One of the best parts of what we do is connecting with the people we serve. We genuinely enjoy opportunities like these to interact with our community, share a little about what we do, and build meaningful relationships with our residents.

Here at North Lyon Fire, we believe strong community relationships are just as important as the emergency services we provide. These connections help build trust, strengthen partnerships, and remind us why we’re so proud to serve this community.

A huge thank you to our friends from Fernley Estates for spending part of their day with us! We enjoyed your visit and hope you had as much fun as we did!

With wet weather forecasted to move through our area, North Lyon Fire wants to remind everyone that a little extra caution behind the wheel can make a big difference.

Rain can create slick roadways, reduce visibility, and increase stopping distances. Whether you’re traveling around Fernley, or commuting on one of our highways, please keep these safety tips in mind:

* SLOW DOWN! Posted speed limits are intended for ideal conditions. Reduce your speed when roads are wet.

* INCREASE YOUR FOLLOWING DISTANCE. Wet roads mean longer stopping distances. Give yourself extra room between vehicles.

* TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS. Make sure other drivers can see you! Don’t rely solely on automatic daytime running lights.

* WATCH FOR HYDROPLANING. Standing water can cause your tires to lose contact with the roadway. Slow down, avoid sudden movements, and never use cruise control on wet roads.

* BRAKE EARLY AND GENTLY. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, and aggressive acceleration.

* NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADWAYS. You cannot always tell how deep the water is or whether the roadway underneath has been compromised.

* PUT THE PHONE DOWN. Distracted driving is dangerous in any weather, but especially when road conditions deteriorate.

* MOVE OVER AND SLOW DOWN FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES. If you encounter first responders working along the roadway, give them the space they need to work safely.

Getting to your destination a few minutes later is always better than not getting there at all.

Our personnel respond to traffic collisions in all types of weather. Many of these incidents can be prevented by slowing down, staying alert, and adjusting your driving habits to the conditions.

We’d love to meet you, but let’s do that at our Open House on Saturday, and not on the side of the road.

Stay dry, and stay safe Fernley.

A BIG thank you to all the littles who stopped by Station 61 yesterday for a visit and tour!

We saw all sorts of awesome costumes, but we have to admit… Marshall from PAW Patrol was definitely our favorite! After all, Marshall is one of us!

There’s something special about seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they get to explore the fire station, see our equipment up close, and meet the firefighters who serve their community. As a fun bonus, our friends at Battle Born Medevac were also in between emergency calls, so Oscar and Stephanie showed these youngsters around their helicopter that is also stationed at Station 61.

These visits truly brighten our days! We absolutely love connecting with the smallest members of our community, answering their questions, sharing a few smiles, and hopefully inspiring a few future firefighters along the way.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by! We enjoyed your visit just as much as you did, and we hope to see you again soon!

This morning at approximately 10:42 a.m., North Lyon Fire personnel were dispatched to a reported vegetation fire in the area of Marie Drive and Laine Way in Fernley, near the railroad tracks.

Responding firefighters encountered a fire involving large downed tree trunks, logs, and surrounding vegetation. Crews immediately began suppression efforts to contain the fire and prevent further spread.

Due to the size of the burning logs and the amount of heavy vegetation involved, extensive mop-up was required to break apart the burning material, allowing water to reach deep-seated hot spots.

Firefighters successfully stopped the forward progress of the fire at approximately 11:05 a.m. Crews remained on scene conducting extensive mop-up operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Multiple North Lyon Fire resources responded, including our career and support staff, and all units were released from the incident shortly before 1:00 p.m.

Even as temperatures begin to cool, dry vegetation and downed timber can still ignite and burn intensely. Fires involving large logs and tree trunks can be particularly challenging to extinguish, as heat and embers can remain deep inside the wood long after visible flames are knocked down.

We appreciate the hard work of our firefighters and the community members who promptly report fires and other emergencies.

No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported as a result of this fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
