Today, we were proud to join our mutual aid partners at Stanley Hose Company for a visit to Sherman Central School in honor of Fire Prevention Week.

Each year, fire departments, schools, and families come together to share simple habits that help keep homes and communities safe.

This year's theme is "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower." The focus is on lithium-ion batteries, the kind found in phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, and power tools. These batteries are part of everyday life, and a few good charging habits go a long way:

* Use a charger that came with or is approved for your device.
* Charge devices on hard surfaces (not beds, couches, etc.).
* Unplug once the device is fully charged.
* Stop using any battery that's swollen, unusually hot, or smells odd.

We spent time with the students talking about safe charging and fire safety at home, and we brought along our mini pumper and fire boat for a closer look. The questions were great, and the enthusiasm was even better.

Thank you to Sherman Central School for welcoming us, and to Stanley Hose Company for partnering with us. We hope every student went home ready to share what they learned with their families.

Twenty-five years ago today, 343 firefighters climbed the stairs when everyone else was coming down. They were volunteers and career firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, police officers and everyday people who ran toward danger because someone needed help.

Today, we remember them.

We also honor the men and women who still answer the call β€” in big cities and in small towns like ours. Every firefighter who pulls on their gear at 2 a.m., every EMT who leaves a family dinner when the pager goes off, carries a piece of that same commitment.

To those we lost on September 11, 2001: we will never forget you.

To those who continue to serve: thank you.

Great work by all FLFD members who participated in our full-scale boat incident command and water rescue training last night! We're thrilled to announce that our drowning "victim" survived and will make a full recovery πŸ˜‚. Special thanks to Charles Armstrong for playing the patient and taking a dip in the lake last night!

Attention Findley Lake residents and visitors:

If you see rescue apparatus and activity on or around the lake this evening, there's no need for concern. The Findley Lake Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting a water rescue training exercise tonight, August 18th, starting around 7:00PM.

Our rescue boat and crew will be practicing response scenarios to stay sharp and ready for real emergencies on the water. This is routine training, not an actual incident.

Thank you for your understanding, and as always, thank you for supporting your local volunteers.

The Findley Lake crew was out bright and early this morning for the Shaun Giles run!

Tom and Robert ran the 5K, with Robert taking first place among the Findley Lake contingent at 32 minutes. The rest of us tackled the one-mile fun run β€” and had plenty of fun doing it.

Thanks to everyone who organized and came out. Mornings like this are a good reminder of what a great community we get to serve.

πŸŽ‰πŸš’ Happy Birthday to Chief Jack! πŸš’πŸŽ‰
Today we celebrate the guy who would truly do anything for anyone… even if his facial expressions sometimes suggest otherwise. πŸ˜‚ If you know, you know.

Jack is always there when someone needs him, keeps our department going, and trades in his personal vehicles about as often as the rest of us change our socks. πŸ˜‚ At this point, when Jack pulls up to a call, we have to take a second to figure out if it’s actually him because we never know what he’ll be driving. 🀣
All jokes aside, we are incredibly lucky to have someone who gives so much of his time, cares about his department and his community, and would do just about anything for anyone.
Happy Birthday, Jack! πŸŽ‚πŸš’ Thank you for everything you do for FLFD. We hope you have a great birthday β€” and maybe try to keep the same vehicle long enough for us to learn what it looks like. πŸ˜‚

UPDATE: we found the owner and little Gus, Gus is now home and safe. Thank you for all the shares!

Anyone missing a kitty? This fella found refuge in the FLFD, but unfortunately, we don’t allow long-term tenants. It’s a VERY friendly cat, looks young. Please contact Jessy at 440-487-2171 if you have any information on a potential owner. Thank you!
