Fircrest Police Chief Celis spent story time with the “tots” this past Tuesday at the Fircrest Parks and Recreation Community Center. Chief Celis read “Who Is My Police Officer” to an attentive crowd of youngsters. Tot Story Time is scheduled on Tuesdays, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Center, and occasionally features members of the community as guest readers.

Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for teens ages 15–18 in the United States. Inexperience behind the wheel, combined with speeding, poor judgment, and distractions, puts young drivers at greater risk, especially when friends are in the car.

Distracted driving is a particular concern. One in three teens who text say they have done so while driving. Research has found that dialing a phone while driving increases a teen’s risk of crashing by six times, while texting increases the risk by 23 times.

Phones aren’t the only distraction. Eating or drinking, adjusting music, applying makeup, and interacting with passengers can all take a driver’s attention away from the road. Taking their eyes off the road for even five seconds can have serious consequences.

Parents play an important role in helping teens become safer drivers. Model safe driving habits, establish clear expectations about distractions and passengers, and spend time practicing with your teen. Driver education provides a foundation, but experience behind the wheel is essential to developing safe driving skills.

For more information about teen driving risks and ways to help young drivers stay safe, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s teen driving resources (www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/teen-driving).

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟗. As students head back to class, we’re asking drivers to pay a little extra attention, especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times.

Please slow down, stay alert, and give yourself a little extra time. The graphic below is a good refresher on when drivers are required to stop for a school bus.

𝐀 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬-𝐮𝐩 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲: Whittier is under construction, so expect changes to normal traffic patterns and extra activity around the school. Please use a little extra patience and caution as everyone gets used to the new routine.

Let’s help our students start the school year safely.

⭐ Officer Commendation – Officer Lease ⭐

We would also like to recognize Officer Lease for his outstanding actions during a November 2024 shots-fired investigation. While working alone that night, Officer Lease quickly recognized suspicious activity, pursued three armed suspects, and successfully apprehended one. His actions, along with the assistance of neighboring agencies, led to the recovery of multiple fi****ms and ultimately helped bring a dangerous case to justice.

In June 2026, the suspect was found guilty of four counts of Assault in the First Degree and one count of Drive-by Shooting. Officer Lease’s vigilance, courage, and dedication to protecting our community exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement.

Outstanding work, Officer Lease! We are proud to have you serving the Fircrest community.

The Fircrest Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow officers of LVMPD Officer Austin Abdelnabi. Our thoughts are with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the entire Las Vegas community during this difficult time.

Please keep Officer Abdelnab, his loved ones, and his colleagues in your thoughts.

It is with profound sadness that we honor the life and sacrifice of LVMPD Officer Austin Abdelnabi.

Officer Abdelnabi was a 30-year-old Marine Corps veteran who dedicated his life to serving both his country and his community. After joining the LVMPD in November 2023, he was assigned to the Southeast Area Command, where his infectious laugh, larger-than-life personality, and genuine compassion left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Above all, he cherished his wife, Sage, with whom he shared eight years of marriage.

On August 4, 2026, Officer Abdelnabi was tragically killed in the line of duty while responding to a call involving a person with a gun.

We ask our community to keep Officer Abdelnabi's family, friends, and our entire LVMPD family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Officer Austin Abdelnabi's courage, selfless service, and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We will honor his legacy.
