Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area We are one of two National Heritage Areas in Alabama. MSNHA’s three themes are music, Native American heritage & the Tennessee River.

A program of the National Park Service, MSNHA preserves & promotes cultural & natural resources in northwest Alabama's six counties: Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone & Morgan. Part of the National Park Service’s National Heritage Areas program, MSNHA helps promote cultural tourism through education, preservation & conservation in the six northwest Alabama counties of the Tennessee River basin: Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone & Morgan. We focus on historic & natural stories as we inform, educate, develop & interpret visitor-ready sites to chronicle the evolution of the area’s landscape, extending these opportunities to the largest audience possible. Learn more about MSNHA at our website, msnha.una.edu.

Great job on the latest spooky-season clue! We showed you a photo of a house and asked you to identify it & share its ghostly traditions. Here's the whole story:

Plantation owner William Winston completed this Tuscumbia house in 1833. The Georgian-style dwelling was built by enslaved workers & is the largest antebellum home in Tuscumbia. Winston was the father of Alabama Gov. John A. Winston and grandfather of Maud Lindsey, educator & children's books author. In 1948 the family sold the property to the city of Tuscumbia, which built the Deshler High School campus around it. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The Winston family cemetery is approximately one mile northwest of the house. In 1874 a tornado touched down in Tuscumbia damaging the home & claiming the life of Judith Winston, who is said to haunt the building ever since.

Fifty-six years ago today, the Osmonds recorded their No. 1 smash “One Bad Apple” with producer Rick Hall at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. Recording engineer Jerry Masters, best known for his subsequent tenure at Muscle Shoals Sound, recalls working on this and other hits during his FAME apprenticeship in this exclusive interview clip. For more on FAME Studios and the legacy of Muscle Shoals music, visit MSNHA’s Roots of American Music Trail website at https://musictrail.una.edu.
