🌟 YOUTH VOICES. YOUTH LEADERSHIP. YOUTH ACTION. 🌟

Our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is showing what it looks like when young people are given the opportunity to lead, educate, and make a difference in their community. 💜

YAC members Antonio Singeltary, Joy Zheng, and Fahad Safar recently prepared their information table for The Assembly Church of Florence’s “Mind, Body, & Soul Expo” on September 26, 2026.

From preparing materials to engaging with their community, these young leaders are helping bring awareness, education, and prevention to the conversation. 🗣️✨

The Youth Advisory Council gives young people a voice at the table—because they aren't just the future of our communities.

They are leaders right now. 💪🏽

💜 We are proud of Antonio, Joy, and Fahad for stepping up, showing up, and using their voices to make a difference.

Want to see what our young people are doing? Follow the P*e Dee Coalition and stay connected with the YAC!

💜 OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH.

And awareness means nothing if it ends with a purple ribbon.

Because somewhere tonight, someone is calculating how to get through the next few hours safely.

Someone is hiding bruises.
Someone is deleting messages.
Someone is making excuses for an injury they didn’t cause.
Someone is watching their children absorb things no child should ever have to see.
Someone is being told that they are worthless, crazy, difficult, unlovable—or that no one will believe them.

And someone may be sitting right beside you.

Domestic violence does not always look like a black eye. Sometimes it looks like isolation. Control. Threats. Financial abuse. Constant monitoring. Sexual coercion.
Humiliation. Fear.

And sometimes, the most dangerous thing a survivor faces isn't whether someone will hurt them. It’s whether anyone will believe them. Whether anyone will ask, “How can I help?” instead of “Why don't you just leave?” Whether someone will stand beside them when standing beside them becomes uncomfortable.

So this October, don't just wear purple.

Pay attention.

📌Learn what abuse actually looks like.
📌Believe people when they tell you they are afraid.
📌Stop making excuses for abusive behavior.
📌Stop asking survivors to carry the responsibility for someone else's violence.
📌Speak up when you hear jokes, comments, or attitudes that normalize abuse.
📌Support survivors without judgment.
📌Teach our children that love does not control, threaten, intimidate, or hurt.

Because silence doesn't make violence disappear.
And looking away doesn't make us neutral.
💜 Behind every statistic is a person.
Real people. Real stories. Real lives.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let's do more than raise awareness. Let's become the people who make it harder for abuse to hide.

More awareness.
More courage.
More support.
Safer communities.

💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month—and awareness means more when we show up.

This October, the P*e Dee Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Assault is bringing events, conversations, resources, education, and opportunities to take action to communities throughout the P*e Dee.

From In Her Shoes simulations and resource fairs to self-defense classes, community walks, faith-based events, youth programs, National Night Out events, Purple Thursday, and more, there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

You don’t have to be a survivor, advocate, or professional to make a difference. You can attend. You can learn. You can listen. You can start a conversation. You can help someone recognize that they are not alone.

💜 Your community needs you to show up.
💜 Your voice can challenge silence.
💜 Your presence can help someone feel seen.
💜 Your involvement helps us build communities where every door can lead to safety.

📅 Check out our October 2026 Calendar of Events and find an event near you. With activities happening across the P*e Dee, there are many ways to participate, learn, and stand with survivors.

👉 Visit peedeecoalition.org/calendar-of-events for the full calendar and event details.

This October, don't just wear purple. Be present. Be informed. Be part of the change. 💜

💜 FAITH IN ACTION. COMMUNITY IN HEART. 💜

A little kindness can make a BIG difference! 🧹✨

The Missionaries of Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church recently donated much-needed cleaning supplies to the P*e Dee Coalition’s satellite site in Hartsville.

Their thoughtful contribution helps us keep our space welcoming, safe, and ready to serve individuals and families in our community. But beyond the supplies, their generosity reminds us what happens when compassion turns into action. 🙌🏾

We are incredibly grateful to The Missionaries of Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church for seeing a need and stepping up to meet it. 💜

Thank you for putting your faith into action and helping us continue our mission of serving our community!

🫶🏾 Thank you for being part of the work. Thank you for making a difference.

🚨Strangulation Is Never “Just Part of an Argument” or "A Reasonable Reaction"🚨

The P*e Dee Region is seeing an increase in cases of strangulation connected to domestic violence, and this is something our entire community needs to take seriously.

Strangulation is a serious form of violence—and it can happen without leaving visible marks. Even when someone appears okay afterward, internal injuries and delayed medical complications can occur, with both extreme short-term and long-term side effects.

More importantly, strangulation is a significant warning sign for escalating violence and increased homicide risk. It should always be taken seriously.

If you or someone you know has experienced strangulation, here are some options:
💜 Seek medical attention, even if there are no visible injuries.
🗣️ Tell someone you trust about what happened.
📞 Connect with a P*e Dee Coalition Advocate to discuss safety options and support.
🚨 If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

You deserve to be safe. You deserve to live. You deserve to be believed. And you don't have to navigate this alone.

🚨 LET’S TALK ABOUT A TERRIFYING, HIDDEN FORM OF ABUSE: WEAPONIZING THE SYSTEM. 🚨

Abuse doesn’t always look like physical violence. Sometimes, it looks like paperwork, investigations, courtrooms, and accusations. ⚖️📄

When children are involved, an abusive partner may attempt to use the very systems designed to protect families as another tool of power and control.

Here’s what it can look like:

👧 THE COACHING
Children may be manipulated, pressured, or coached to repeat statements, fears, or allegations to caseworkers or other professionals.

📞 THE FALSE REPORTS
An abusive parent may make malicious or retaliatory reports to DSS/CPS—or create circumstances designed to make the protective parent appear unsafe.

💔 THE ISOLATION
Suddenly, the victim is under investigation. They may feel terrified, judged, embarrassed, or afraid to ask for help because they worry that seeking support will be used against them.

🎭 THE CONTROL
The abusive parent may present themselves as the “concerned” or cooperative parent while the victim is left on the defensive—fighting to protect their children, their reputation, and their own well-being.

⚠️ This is not always about child safety. Sometimes, it is about power, punishment, retaliation, and keeping a survivor trapped in the cycle of abuse.

If you are navigating a DSS/CPS investigation that you believe is being fueled by an abusive ex-partner, please know this: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. ❤️

📝 Document concerning incidents, communications, and interactions.
⚖️ Seek qualified legal advice.
🤝 Connect with a domestic violence advocate who understands coercive control and system manipulation.
💜 Most importantly, don’t suffer in silence.

Asking for help is not a weakness.
Protecting yourself and your children is not something to be ashamed of.
You deserve support, safety, and to be heard. 💜

💙 A Belated Thank You to Mayor Dan Askins! 💙

We want to take a moment to extend our sincere appreciation to Mayor Askins of Hartsville, SC for taking the time to visit our Durant Children’s Center, tour our facility, and learn more about the important work we do to support children and families in our communities.

We are especially grateful for the Mayor’s willingness to listen, learn, and recognize the needs of children in our community as a priority. Community leaders play an important role in bringing awareness to the issues affecting children and helping create communities where every child has the opportunity to be safe, supported, and heard.

Thank you for investing your time in learning about the work happening at Durant Children’s Center and for helping shine a light on the importance of protecting and prioritizing the well-being of our children. Your engagement and commitment to understanding these needs truly matter. 💙

Together, we can continue working toward safer, stronger communities for every child.
