Dear families,
We know that you -- like us -- have likely been stricken by the news of yet another school shooting, this one close to home here in Oregon. There truly are no words that help us to reckon with such a tragedy. And of course it makes us all wonder about our own safety and the safety of our children--at FGCS and in any school.
I hope it goes without saying that we take our responsibility for your children very seriously. It is central to our work here every single day. Our current safety measures include locks on doors, intercom system, cameras, controlled access doors--and we are working on more. Over Thanksgiving break we are having perimeter fencing installed. In addition, we do drills, emphasize active supervision in all settings, have protocols for early intervention, conduct threat assessments, and work closely with families to support all children. Staff and I will also be reviewing and reevaluating our safety protocols.
Your children may ask the adults in their lives--you and us--about what happened and if they are safe at school. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a helpful resource for how to talk to children in situations like this. Please take some time to review it. At school, we will be doing school--teaching and learning. We won't bring up the topic, but if children ask we will respond with age-appropriate language and will emphasize that the adults have plans for emergencies and their job if we have an emergency is to listen to the adults helping them. We will be looking out for students who are anxious and our student support coach, Jana Woodson, will check in with them. As always, we will be working to make sure this school is a place where children feel known, connected, protected and cared for by the adults around them.
If your child seems particularly unsettled by these recent events and/or if you'd like to talk more about this or any topic, please reach out to me. I welcome that conversation and want to work with you to support your child.
