People living with HIV who have low CD4 counts are at higher risk for cryptococcal meningitis, a serious fungal infection of the brain, and spinal cord.

Knowing your CD4 count and understanding your risk factors can save your life. Your CD4 count is a measure of the white blood cells that help your immune system fight infections. A higher CD4 count means your immune system is stronger. A lower CD4 count can mean your body has a harder time fighting infections like meningitis.

Talk to your provider about your CD4 count

True or false: pregnant women should receive HIV testing during their pregnancy?

True!

Perinatal transmission of HIV occurs when HIV passes from the mother to a fetus or baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Testing during pregnancy can help prevent perinatal HIV transmission and keep moms healthier throughout their pregnancy.
