I wanted to post this last Sunday for the 107th Anniversary of the hotel’s opening but life got in the way. You’re getting it today instead! This came to us all the way from Rome a few weeks ago. It’s an 8 page article about the hotel from 1921 written entirely in Italian. The Italian I learned back in high school has completely failed me and I haven’t had a chance to translate the whole thing yet. Feel free to give it a go!

81 years ago today, Glenn Miller’s plane went missing over the English Channel. At the height of his popularity, he put his fame behind him to serve the country, something he would make the ultimate sacrifice for. I had the pleasure of seeing The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra live last night. After their performance of Pennsylvania 6-5000, music director Erik Stabnau gave a great mini history lesson on Glenn’s connection to the hotel and how the song came to be. 85 years after it was released, the song is a great little piece of the hotel that never goes away. Below is a clip of last night’s performance.

106 years ago today Hotel Pennsylvania opened it’s doors as the largest hotel in the world. To celebrate, here is a recently acquired 1920s menu from the Grill Room located in the basement of the hotel. The Grill Room would later go on to become the Madhattan Room, a famous jazz club where Benny Goodman had a multi-year a residency.

See the attached photos for pictures of the Grill Room as it was when the hotel first opened and during its years as the Madhattan Room.

Some very exciting news! I just received a package all the way from Ohio containing the missing parts I needed to fully repair the Servidors I salvaged from Hotel Pennsylvania. These parts came from the former Wade Park Manor hotel in Cleveland that was built in 1923. This hotel had nearly identical Sevidors to the ones in Hotel Pennsylvania.

Wade Park Manor recently underwent a conversion into a luxury senior living complex, and in the process, quite a few Servidors were decommissioned. Instead of going to waste, their Project Manager Bill put out a message that he’d like to try and get some use out of them. The stars aligned and I just so happened to see his post and need exactly what he could offer! Our hotel’s Sevidors can now go back to being 100% functional with all original factory parts. Attached is a sneak peak picture of the parts and a picture of Wade Park Manor.

Here’s one of the few very videos I’ve seen of the hotel in its early years. This is circa 1920. Video courtesy of Getty Images
