The Scott County Forestry Association had a wonderful time out at Harrell Prairie in Forest, MS on Saturday exploring all the native wildflowers that can regenerate themselves after natural or prescribed burns.

In 1974, an aerial view showed the encroachment of vegetation on the prairie and the forestry commission started the restoration of this prairie. In 1976, it was listed as a National Natural Landmark and in 1980 it became a Botanical Area.

The peak viewing time for this area is around Father's Day in June, but the view is constantly changing with the seasons depending on the life cycle of the wildflowers and native grasses.

This is the time of the year we see red blooms coming up in the middle of nowhere.

These red flowers come from a bulb in the genus Lycoris.

Most people will know them as spider lilies, resurrection lilies, naked ladies, surprise lilies, or maybe even hurricane lilies.

If you see them coming up in the middle of a field or at the edge of a wood line, this is usually a good indicator that there was an old homeplace there at one time.

These flowers will emerge in September before the foliage appears. Once the flower dies back you will start to notice the leaves emerge. Wait until the leaves start to turn yellow to dig them up and replant into another location.

The red blooms are the most common in our area, but they also come in yellow and pink.
