Latest Update on Hurricane Isaias!!
OVERVIEW:
• Hurricane Isaias continues to gather strength in the Gulf and is expected to become a Major Hurricane this afternoon, before making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast tonight.
• Confidence continues to increase in significant rain and wind impacts to the area. As a reminder, both severity and extent of the impacts to north and central Georgia will be determined by both the intensity, the track and banding features that set up. The latest forecast cone has been included at the bottom of the email; however, this is NOT representative of the potential areal extent of wind and flooding hazards from the storm.
KEY MESSAGES:
• The overall extent and severity of impacts to north and central GA are coming into focus, with widespread heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for tornadoes from tonight through early Sunday.
• Rain bands on the east and northeast side of the storm will present a higher risk for heavy rainfall, gustier winds, and an isolated tornado threat.
• Winds will pick up late this afternoon through Saturday with gusts ranging between 35 and 45 mph all day Saturday into Sunday AM as Isaias moves inland and interacts with a strong mid Atlantic high pressure.
TIMING:
• Impacts remain mostly likely from around midnight tonight through early Sunday morning, with peak impacts expected on Saturday.
IMPACTS:
• A long duration wind event with gusts to 35-45mph (even if not tied directly to Isaias), which could cause scattered power outages from downed trees and powerlines, especially as soils become saturated.
• Widespread heavy rainfall will create a risk for flash flooding/river flooding.
• Several tornadoes will be possible.
