The Hispanic community has been an important part of Larimer County since the 1910s. During the Mexican Revolution, workers began to immigrate to Colorado to escape political turmoil and work. In need of cheap labor, Western farm lobbyists successfully convinced Congress to exempt Mexican workers from regular immigration requirements. This made it easier for more Mexican immigrants to live and work in Colorado.

Many Mexican immigrants worked at the Great West Sugar factory on East Vine Drive. As the Hispanic community grew, the Great West Sugar factory built a neighborhood nearby called Alta Vista. It was a neighborhood meant to cater specifically to Mexican Americans. More workers immigrated and the community grew over the years.

Despite their prominence and hard work in the community, Hispanic Americans often faced discrimination in Fort Collins. Store windows at the time had signs that said “No Dogs or Mexicans Allowed." Hispanic students were often forced to sit in the back of classrooms. Despite this, the Hispanic community in Larimer county remained and continued to grow. North Fort Collins remains an important hub for Hispanic culture in Larimer County to this day.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 - October 15. This month, we honor and recognize the deep history and influence of Hispanic Americans, both in the U.S. and in Larimer County. At the Health District, we work actively to overcome barriers to healthcare that a community has historically faced. We also offer services like interpretation to ensure everyone has equal access to Health District resources.

Su***de is an important issue that has touched thousands of lives. September 10 is World Su***de Prevention day. Here are three practical ways you can help support yourself, your community or someone who may be struggling:

1. Check in with loved ones.

Take the time to reach out to someone in your community, especially if they are showing signs of struggling. Offering support, showing empathy and validating their feelings is more likely to help the situation than worsen it.

2. Share your story.

If your life has been impacted by su***de, your story can help someone who may be struggling. Sharing your own experience can help people know that they are not alone.

3. Advocate for mental health awareness.

Promote mental health awareness on social media and in personal conversations. It helps normalize these conversations and makes it easier to reach out for help when it’s needed.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, immediately call or text the Su***de and Crisis hotline at 988.
