Sometimes trees are removed from forests to reduce competition, promote tree species diversity or reduce wildfire risk. But what happens to that wood?

It can become construction materials, furniture, animal bedding, energy products and more.

The Colorado Forest Products Database features local companies making products with wood from Colorado forests generated through forest management activities.

This , explore the database and discover Colorado wood products and businesses near you: https://csfs.colostate.edu/colorado-forest-products-database/

Since 1960, the U.S. has set aside the third week in October to recognize the value and importance of forest products and their sustainable uses.

To support Colorado companies that produce products made with at least 50% wood derived from Colorado forests as a result of forest management activities, visit https://csfs.colostate.edu/colorado-forest-products-database/

Petrified wood is a type of fossilization. The organic materials in a tree (cellulose and lignin) are slowly replaced by minerals in the surrounding mud. It takes over a million years to crystallize.

This is a pretty cool petrified pine cone one of our foresters found near La Veta Pass. Petrified wood and other fossils teach us about ancient ecosystems, vegetation evolution and past climates.

Today on National Loggers Day, we recognize the hardworking logging professionals who play a vital role in sustaining the health and productivity of our nationโ€™s forests. Through active forest management work, carried out in partnership with the Forest Service, loggers help reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health, support local economies, and maintain resilient landscapes for future generations.

Thank you to the loggers who help us care for and manage your national forests.

While CSUโ€™s main-campus squirrels feast on dropped chips and trail mix, our Foothills Campus squirrels are doing it the old-fashioned way. ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ

They forage for burr oak acorns and sunflower seeds near the Colorado State Forest Service state office.

Lean. Scrappy. Living off the land.

Respect, little squirrel. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐ŸŒฐ

Yes, weโ€™re sawing the root ball. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿชš

Container grown trees can develop roots that circle around the root ball.

Shaving off the outer layer encourages those roots to grow outward into the soil.

What fuels a Colorado State University Homecoming bonfire? Forest management. ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ”ฅ

With help from the Society of American Foresters CSU chapter, we collected branches, logs and other woody material left over from work at Borden Memorial Forest.

Removing this material reduces wildfire fuels in the forest. Hauling it to campus means it can also help fuel a favorite CSU tradition. ๐Ÿ
