A Wellington man was arrested after threatening children and making derogatory racial statements.

On Sunday, October 11th, 2026, just before 6pm, Dispatch received multiple 9-1-1 calls about an argument involving a gun in a neighborhood. Responding deputies learned that it began during an interaction between a driver and kids on e-motos at a neighborhood park in Wellington. The driver made threatening statements, drove away, then returned on foot. The argument continued, then progressed as the man returned home and the other parties followed. Witnesses reported that he retrieved a r***e and threatened to shoot people. Deputies also learned that the man made racial slurs during the interaction.

When deputies arrived, they contacted the suspect, identified as John Alexander Hunter (DOB 07/06/1987) at his home in the 4000-block of River Run Lane. Hunter was uncooperative and made threatening statements while other children were present. Deputies successfully de-escalated the situation and safely took Hunter into custody. Interviews were conducted with witnesses and Hunter was arrested on the following:

•Felony Menacing - 6 counts (class 5 felony)
•Bias Motivated Crimes - 3 counts (class 1 misdemeanor)
•Prohibited Use of a Weapon (class 1 misdemeanor)
•Child Abuse - 3 counts (class 2 misdemeanor)
•Disorderly Conduct (petty offense)

Hunter was issued a $7,500 cash bond by the Larimer County Court. A booking photo can be located on our website.

“We will not tolerate violent threats or targeting people because of their ethnicity. This behavior is never acceptable, and it’s especially heinous when children are present,” said Sheriff John Feyen. “I’m grateful to deputies for their rapid response and skillful de-escalation of this situation. Fortunately, no one got physically hurt, but the harm caused by hatred is very real.”

Roadway safety is an ongoing topic within our community and across the state. LCSO plays a continual role in these discussions when it comes to education and enforcement. The charges are merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.

2 suspects arrested after pursuit in Larimer County

Just before midnight on October 8th, LCSO located a vehicle that had eluded Fort Collins Police officers a short time earlier. LCSO deputies tried to stop it, but the vehicle continued eluding at speeds exceeding 100mph south on I-25. The driver recklessly attempted to pass another vehicle and crashed into a guardrail near the Highway 60 exit. Fortunately, there were no injuries. After a high risk stop, deputies safely took the driver and a passenger into custody. Deputies recovered a loaded handgun from the vehicle.

The male driver was arrested for eluding, traffic violations, driving under the influence, and reckless endangerment. Another male passenger was arrested for prohibited use of weapons. Both were booked into the Larimer County Jail.

Dangerous driving affects everyone in our community and we’re glad no one was injured from this incident. LCSO works hard to keep our roadways safe and ensure reckless drivers are held accountable.

🐕⚕♥ Thanks to the incredible generosity of local community members, our two newest K9s are now equipped with advanced medical supplies!

Local animal lovers Ted and Danielle wanted to help protect K9s Ocho and Goose while these boys are out serving our community. Through their support, our newest pups now have their own Protection4Paws K9 Trauma Kits. These top-of-the-line "buddy bags" include specialized equipment to treat a range of life-threatening injuries, from weapons-related trauma to heat emergencies and more. We hope they never need it, but if an injury does occur, every second counts.

We can't even begin to express how much this means to our handlers and team. Thank you again to the Evans-Phillips Family Charitable Fund for your thoughtful support!

⛰️A stranded climber was safely rescued from Greyrock Mountain through a coordinated multi-agency response.

Earlier this week, Dispatch got a call from a man whose friend was stuck high on the Alvin climbing route. The Dispatcher sent him a PreparedLive link, which allowed him to stream live video from his location. This gave the team of responders precise details about the terrain, conditions, and resources needed.

Our LCSO Tactical Rescue Paramedic coordinated with UCHealth LifeLine, who met the rescue crew at Hewlett Gulch. The helicopter transported our medic and five Larimer County Search and Rescue, Inc. team members and dropped them off near the stranded climber.

Another group of LCSAR members and our Emergency Services command team drove up and staged to the Greyrock Trailhead to provide further support. The weather looked sketchy on the drive up, so Dispatch connected with our partners at the US National Weather Service Denver/Boulder Colorado to get a spot forecast (a specialized, site-specific prediction). Fortunately, weather data showed that the sky was on our side and didn't present additional risks.

Two LCSAR rescue climbers established a rope system, secured the stranded man, and safely lowered him to the ground. The climber wasn't injured; however, he had fallen prior to the rescue effort. He managed to catch himself, but the outcome could have been very different.

The group hiked back down together, and everyone went home safely.

None of this would be possible without the skill and seamless collaboration among our partners. Dispatch gathered critical information that gave responders exactly what they needed to make a plan. LifeLine's "Lift Ticket" program saved the crew hours and reduced their exposure to hazards. Our tactical rescue paramedic's field leadership and LCSAR's technical climbing expertise led to a safe, efficient rescue.

Thank you to all who made this a successful mission!

Earlier this month, our K9 Unit took to the shores of Horsetooth Reservoir for a water training day. The team practices in different environments throughout the year to expose our dogs to a variety of sights, sounds, smells, and experiences. This helps them prepare for any situation they may encounter on the job.

With a little help from our Ranger partners at Larimer County Natural Resources, these guys got their sea legs, built confidence in and on the water, and practiced narcotics detection in the (actual) wild.

Big shoutout to our K9 decoys as well. They play a huge role in the success of our dogs by working with handlers to actively reinforce desired behaviors. Their commitment to this team is no easy walk in the park - as you might imagine, catching fur missiles for hours on end is physically exhausting!

We're proud of these pups and their handlers who work hard to keep our Larimer County community safe.
