On Wednesday September 16th at 2:41pm, Fort Dodge Firefighters and EMS were dispatched to the area of 731 Exposition drive for a report of a tree that had fallen on a person.
All fire units were conducting annual hose testing at the former Land O' Lakes on 8th Avenue South. Engine 1 and Truck 25 responded from that location, and Medic 1 responded from the station. When crews arrived, they found a subject pinned under a large section of tree trunk that had been cut, and took an unexpected path when it fell. Engine 11 was immediately requested to respond due to it having technical rescue equipment. While Engine 11 was en route, Engine 1, Truck 25 and Medic 1 crews began patient treatment, and used a hydraulic spreader and step cribbing to move the log off the patient, and stabilize it, ultimately freeing them.
The patient was placed on a backboard, and when Engine 11 arrived, into a stokes basket. A low angle rope system was constructed on 7th Street above the incident, using anchors built into Engine 1 and Truck 25. Starting with a 3:1 mechanical advantage, rescuers began to move the patient up the hill. This was quickly changed to a 5:1 for less effort and smoother operation due to the severe angle of the hill the patient was on. The patient was safely and successfully moved to 7th street and then transported by ambulance to Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center.
The Fort Dodge Fire Department was assisted on scene by Fort Dodge Police Department -Official-.
