How do our Broward State Attorney's Office prosecutors wind down after a busy week in the courtroom?

These 11 happy women love the justice system so much that they organized a weekend team-bonding trip to "The Jury Experience" in Fort Lauderdale, where they got to play the roles of jurors on a fictional murder case.

Our team – assistant state attorneys in our Sexual Battery, Elder Abuse, and Human Trafficking units – got a new perspective on their public service at the show, which bills itself as "jury duty like you've never experienced before" and "the thrills, the intrigue, and the power to decide, minus the paperwork!"

Broward Assistant State Attorney Isis Huxable attended the very informative 2026 Collaborate Connect Act annual training conference in Boca Raton, hosted by the Florida Domestic Violence Collaborative.

The training focused on important topics and resources to help prevent domestic violence and how to confront it from all possible angles. These include initiatives from law enforcement, prosecutors, nonprofits, social work, healthcare and educational organizations to prevent domestic violence from occurring, help empower victims and survivors to leave abusive situations, and to hold the offenders accountable.

The collaborative organization includes our local partners, Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc.

Our Conviction Review Unit prosecutors, accompanied by one of our exonerees, led a "Lunch and Learn" for our summer interns today.

Arielle Demby Berger, the assistant state attorney in charge of the unit, and Assistant State Attorney Pam Weisberg explained how they investigate claims of innocence, our work on reinvestigations and exonerations, and how we ensure that victims’ rights are protected and that justice is served.

Sidney Holmes, who served 34 years in prison for an armed robbery before he was exonerated by our Conviction Review Unit and released from prison in 2023, answered questions and spoke of his personal experiences. We are very grateful to Mr. Holmes for his continuing work to help prevent future wrongful convictions and train new generations of prosecutors.

Congratulations to all the 2025-26 graduates of the Urban League of Broward County's Youth Hate Crime Education and Prevention Leadership Program! This is a one-year program that empowered high school students from our community to present projects that help educate their peers and prevent hate crimes in their schools.

Broward Assistant State Attorney Veronica Walker, the chief of our Hate Crimes Unit, and members of our Broward County Hate Crimes Task Force were there to show their support. ASA Walker presented these amazing young leaders with challenge coins from Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor.

We are excited to see the fruits of their labor as they continue to lead in our schools and our community.

Due to water and air conditioning issues, the North and East Wings of the main courthouse complex in Fort Lauderdale have been closed today. The West Wing of the courthouse remains operational and is not affected. Regional courthouses in Hollywood, Plantation and Deerfield Beach remain open.

Chief Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips ordered the closure of the North and East Wings following the failures. The City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County are actively working to resolve the issues.

Updates will be provided as soon as they become available.
