February is Black History Month — an opportunity for Americans to learn and reflect on the details of the nation’s history and how it was built. As the saying goes, Black history is American history—and it’s a varied and rich history. A wise nation honors and learns from its past. What happened in the past shapes and informs where we are heading in the future, and it’s of paramount importance to set aside a month for learning as much as we can about Black history.

Young people who are Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous experience homelessness at higher rates, largely due to systemic and structural racism. It’s critical for everyone in the community to know and recognize the valuable contributions of these ethnic communities to our society and to support their young people as they develop their own identities and grow.

OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to Covenant Compassionate Youth Clinic volunteers for engaging with the young people we serve at our Orlando Resource Center. Third-year medical students from the UCF College of Medicine offered the youth the opportunity to talk about various health topics informally and safely during the Health Information Event organized by Chandershekhar Shori, MPH, CCYC Director, with his peers and professors.

A Heartfelt Thanks to Our Board of Directors:

Earlier this month, our dedicated Board of Directors came together to kick off 2025 and reaffirm their commitment to expanding Covenant House Florida’s impact, reach, and relevance in the Greater Fort Lauderdale and Orlando Communities. Their tireless efforts and unwavering dedication ensure that homeless youth have a safe place to sleep, caring staff, education and career navigation opportunities, housing assistance, and a clear path toward exiting homelessness. We are deeply grateful for their leadership and support in making our mission possible!

Covenant House is guided by five principles informed by the trauma we encounter daily among our youth. In addition to immediate care and sanctuary, our principles include value communication (modeling caring relationships based on love, trust, respect, and honesty), structure (especially stability), and choice (by which we encourage youth to believe in themselves and make informed choices for themselves).

As a society, we can accompany young people of color in overcoming the traumatic effects of racism if we all do a better job of being their allies, encouraging their capacity for resilience, and remembering, as the authors of the book “Reaching Teens” remind us, “We belong to each other.”
