blind and print disabled since 1975.

The Talking Books Program was established in 1931 by an Act of Congress to serve blind adults. It was expanded in 1952 to include children, in 1962 to provide music materials, and again in 1966 to include individuals with other physical impairments that prevent their reading standard print. It is now called the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) at the Library of Congress.

Information Request | That All May Read 11/08/2023

The National Library Service for Blind and Print Disabled provides reading materials at no cost to individuals whose temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, physical disability, or other disability makes it difficult to read regular print. Services are administered through a network of cooperating libraries across the United States. NLS readers may receive materials in two ways: Via download to a personal device through the Braille and Audio Talking Books are free, just apply. Reading Download (BARD) app/website or through the United States Postal Service. In either case, there is no charge. The service is available to all U.S. residents and citizens living abroad.
