The real-life superheroes of the ER deserve a little cheering on! 👏🚒

Yesterday, in celebration of Emergency Nurses Day, our firefighters lined the entrance to Broward Health Medical Center’s Emergency Department to show some love to the incredible nurses heading home and coming in for their shifts.

Armed with Life Savers and Smarties (both fitting for the occasion 😉), along with plenty of applause, we wanted to remind these *unstoppable* healthcare heroes just how much they’re appreciated.

Happy Emergency Nurses Week! ❤️🚑🩺

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue will conduct high-rise firefighting training Thursday, October 15, throughout the day at 201 SE 2nd Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Firefighters, emergency vehicles, and simulated smoke may be visible in the area.

This is a planned exercise, not an emergency.

Training like this helps keep our firefighters prepared and our community safe!

A career of service deserves a special sendoff! 🚒👏

Last week, we celebrated the retirement of Logistics Supervisor Robert Mack, whose career with the City of Fort Lauderdale began in 1993.

While he may not have worn a firefighter’s uniform, his impact was felt on every call. Working quietly behind the scenes, Robert ensured our firefighters had the tools they needed to do their job.

After more than three decades of dedicated service, we honored him with a traditional fire service retirement ceremony. A fitting farewell for someone whose contributions were vital to our mission.

Congratulations on your retirement, Robert!

When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it's important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

A timely reminder during Fire Prevention Week. 🔥🔋

This afternoon, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews responded to a 7th-floor apartment fire in Wilton Manors involving the lithium-ion battery of a self-balancing electric scooter.

With lithium-ion battery safety the focus of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, this incident highlights the potential dangers associated with these increasingly common devices.

While lithium-ion batteries are generally safe when used properly, they can sometimes fail, overheat and ignite.

⚠️ A few important safety reminders:

🔌 Use only manufacturer-approved chargers.
🌙 Avoid charging devices overnight or unattended.
🚪 Keep devices away from exits and escape routes while charging.
🔥 Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, overheating or giving off unusual odors.

Lithium-ion batteries power so much of our daily lives. Knowing the risks and taking a few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe.

Congratulations to Promise Johnson, a 3rd grader at Dillard Elementary for winning our Fire Prevention Week poster contest! She designed a poster to help teach her peers about safe charging, which is exactly what this week is all about.

Commissioner Glassman also presented a proclamation declaring this as Fire Prevention Week in the City of Fort Lauderdale. Thank you, Commissioner Glassman and the entire City Commission!

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it's safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
