After 29.5 years of dedicated service, Officer Sweet is retiring from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

Throughout his career, Officer Sweet served in Patrol, the Field Training Officer Program, Tactical Impact Unit and Mounted Unit, leaving a lasting impact on both our department and the community we serve. His dedication, professionalism and compassion were recognized throughout the years with numerous commendations and citations.

Officer Sweet, thank you for nearly three decades of service to Fort Lauderdale and for the legacy you leave behind. We wish you all the best in this next chapter.

Traffic Tuesday Ep. 55 – TikTok Evidence

She just wanted to show her friends the new car. Unfortunately, getting there included making an illegal U-turn around newly installed barricades specifically designed to prevent it.

When stopped, the driver explained she wasn’t from the area and didn’t realize she couldn’t make the turn. But the U-turn quickly became the smaller issue when the officer discovered her license had been suspended multiple times.

The driver genuinely believed she was taking care of it. She explained that she had hired a traffic attorney, paid money to have her tickets handled, and even pulled out her phone to show the officer proof.

TikTok proof, to be exact.

Despite having plenty of tickets on her record, she had no convictions and believed the suspension was already being addressed. Because she didn’t know her license was still suspended, she was issued a citation for driving while license suspended without knowledge rather than a criminal DWLS charge.

Florida Statute 322.34 addresses driving with a suspended or revoked license, including situations where a driver operates without knowledge of the suspension.

Since she couldn’t legally drive away, her boyfriend came to the scene, took over behind the wheel, and the new car continued its journey without her driving it.

The TikTok evidence helped explain the situation.

It just couldn’t unsuspend the license.

Meet K9 Mal, the newest member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s K9 Unit.

Mal’s path to the department is a little different than most. She was just seven months old when officers found her tied up in a backyard. After no owner came forward, Officer Dougle Ng-A-Kien stepped in to foster her and quickly realized she may have what it takes to become a police K9.

Mal was trained and tested to the same standards as any working dog brought into the department, and she continued to prove herself every step of the way.

Now, at just one year old, Mal has officially earned her badge and serves alongside Officer Ng-A-Kien as an explosive detection K9.

From a shelter dog to a working police K9, Mal’s second chance has become a new purpose serving the Fort Lauderdale community.

A special thank you to Broward County Animal Care for helping make this story possible and for the role they played in giving Mal the opportunity to find her new purpose.

Traffic Tuesday Ep. 54 – Why Wait? Full episode comment “wait”.

Apparently, waiting in school traffic is optional. At least that’s what some drivers seem to think.

After repeated complaints from neighbors, our Motor Unit headed out to address a problem happening regularly during school traffic. Drivers trying to turn onto a nearby side street were getting tired of waiting in the backup, so instead, they were going around the median and driving on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic to reach their turn.

This driver decided to give it a try with an officer watching. And if there was any question about why neighbors were concerned, another driver did the exact same thing during the traffic stop and nearly caused a head-on collision. All to avoid waiting in traffic.

Florida Statute 316.081 requires drivers to operate on the right half of the roadway, with limited exceptions. Driving into an oncoming lane because traffic is backed up isn’t one of them.

Neighborhood complaints help direct our officers to the areas where these problems are happening, and sometimes it doesn’t take long to see exactly what residents are talking about.

School traffic can be frustrating. Oncoming traffic is not the shortcut.
