Of course, on National Donut Day, we had to make a stop at the police department.
Today we had the privilege of visiting the Hollywood Police Department to celebrate National Donut Day and show our appreciation for the men and women who serve our community every day.
While donuts may bring a smile, the history behind this day is much deeper. Established by The Salvation Army in 1938, National Donut Day honors the WWI “Doughnut Girls,” women volunteers who served soldiers on the front lines with donuts, comfort, and encouragement.
Today, donuts are still a simple reminder of something much bigger: showing up for others with kindness, gratitude, and a heart to serve.
Thank you to the Hollywood Police Department for all you do to protect and serve our community, and thank you to Publix for helping us share a sweet token of appreciation.
And thank you Publix for supplying the delicious donuts!
Happy National Donut Day!

🍩 A sweet tradition with over a century of history.
Today, The Salvation Army of Broward County kicked off its National Donut Day celebration at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, an institution that has been the driving economic and community force of our city since its founding in 1926.
During this gathering, which brought together city ambassadors and prominent business leaders, we shared the incredible legacy of our Donut Lassies.
More than just serving a sweet treat during World War I, these brave women brought a message of faith, strength, and hope to the troops on the front lines.
Today, that mission of service lives on. We celebrate the courage, resilience, and respect for all those who publicly serve our community.
A special thank you to Commissioner Kevin Biederman (Hollywood District 5) for joining us and demonstrating, once more, his unwavering support for the initiatives that strengthen our city. 🤝✨

National Donut Day has a special history rooted in service, courage, and compassion.
Established by The Salvation Army in 1938, National Donut Day honors the legacy of the WWI “Doughnut Girls,” women volunteers who served soldiers on the front lines beginning in 1917. Their simple act of providing donuts, comfort, and encouragement became a powerful symbol of hope during an incredibly difficult time.
That spirit of service continued here in Broward County. Salvation Army officers served troops at the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station through USO canteens, providing meals, lodging referrals, fellowship, and pastoral care to thousands of service members.
Today, we remember that National Donut Day is about more than donuts. It is about honoring those who showed up for others with courage, kindness, and a heart to serve.
