Tavern Night is this Saturday, October 24th, and the theme is Celtic & Highland Games. While this is a fun theme on its own, it has a deeper meaning that we are slightly ahead of…the 280th Anniversary of the arrival Scottish Jacobite Hugh Mercer in May 1747.

Yes, the namesake of Mercersburg, who settled in nearby Welsh Run, Hugh Mercer, arrived with other Scots looking for a new life.

The aftermath of the Battle of Culloden (‘45 Uprising,Great Britain) April 16, 1746, caused many Scots to come to America. Hugh Mercer was born in Scotland and was a surgeon in Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite army. After the Jacobites defeat at Culloden, Mercer hid for a year and worked as a farmhand under an alias so to earn enough money to flee to the American colonies.

The move changed his life. Mercer arrived to Philadelphia and settled as far west as possible, near Welsh Run in 1747. He became a country doctor but peace was fleeting.

Mercer enlisted in the Pennsylvania Provincials and fought in the French and Indian War. He visited Fort Loudoun many times. At Fort Ligonier, he befriended Colonel George Washington who convinced Mercer to settle in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He even bought Washington’s childhood home, Ferry Farm, with the intent of establishing his family there.

During the American Revolution Mercer became a General in the American army but was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. After his death Smith’s Town was renamed Mercersburg in his honor.

This Saturday we will toast and honor the arrival of Hugh Mercer, 280 years ago!

Yesterdays Cowans Gap Fall Heritage Days visit was a a great success! Sergeant Hagen completed his duties well and was awarded many belly scratches! Of course he's the star attraction!
Also, obligatory photos with Smoky the Bear were taken!
Aside from that, we had many visitors. Quite a few were from neighboring counties.
Many didn't know the connection of the gap land being part of Forbes Rd.
The blanket of muskets, tools, bags, and wares were appreciated as well.
We also had food that the public could try. One being an 18th Century Apple Fritter recipe. They were surprised at the lack of sweetness. Sugar was a prized commodity and not used much in baking, especially for the average homesteader.
A dark ale, flour, some salt, diced apples, dried red currants, cinnamon, and mace blades were used to make them.
We had a craft of painted stained glass. 37 were completed! We were glad to provide the children with something they could take home! They were quite proud of their projects!
We endured the wind and cold to bring history alive and to show the public a little glimpse of 18th century life.
We explained to a few children that we weren't wearing costumes but actual clothing. Most hand sewn and effort into constructing them as they would have worn them in 18th century life.
They were amazed at them not being purchased at a costume store. This is why we do what we do!
