🚨 **Public Assistance Requested** 🚨

Over the past two weeks, Fort Madison Police officers have located **two severely neglected Shih Tzu-type dogs** in the area of **Storms Court and 26th Street/Avenue D**.

Both dogs were found in extremely poor condition, with severe matting so extensive that they were nearly unrecognizable as dogs. Thankfully, both animals are currently receiving veterinary care and are expected to survive.

Based on the circumstances and locations where the dogs were found, we believe it is possible they may have come from the same residence or owner. We are concerned that **additional dogs could still be living in similar conditions.**

If you have information about these dogs, know who may own them, or have observed other dogs in poor condition in this area, please contact the Fort Madison Police Department. Even information that may seem minor could help us identify the owner and ensure the welfare of any other animals that may be involved.

You may contact Dispatch at (319) 372-1310 or send us a private message through this page.

Please share this post to help us reach as many people as possible.

Thank you for helping us protect the animals in our community.

This time of the year we commonly have calls of what people beleive to be abandoned fawns. Keep the following in mind. Mother deer leave their babies alone for 10-12 hours per day while they forage for themselves and only visit the baby to feed. While this may seem strange to humans, this is a defense mechanism to not attract predators to their newly born baby. So, it is not uncommon to NOT see a mother for many hours. The babies lie still, curled up in the grass, waiting for the mother to return. When first born, fawns are not strong enough on their legs to follow the mother or outrun predators, so they will only move short distances for the first 3-4 weeks of life until they are stronger. Their spotted coat also serves to help camouflage the fawn and keep them safe.

If you find a fawn that is curled up quietly in your yard alone, please do not be concerned. Leave the area so that the mother will feel comfortable enough to return when she is ready.
