Yesterday, Riverview Fire Department responded to an incident involving a lithium-ion battery blower that caught fire. Thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor who spotted the flames, the fire was extinguished before spreading. Our crews arrived to verify there was no remaining extension, cool the unit, and safely remove the device.

The equipment was only 10 months old and had been plugged-in for about 10 minutes when the battery failed.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of our daily tools, but they can fail unexpectedly. To stay safe:
• Monitor batteries while charging and unplug them once complete.
• Charge and store devices on hard, non-combustible surfaces away from exits.
• If a battery begins swelling, smoking, or emitting unusual heat, move away and call 911 immediately.

Riverview responded to this crash this morning. Two occupants were wedged between a semi truck and the concrete barrier. Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Squad 1 freed the vehicle. No injuries to the occupants or responders.

Please remember to pay attention to the road, don't speed, and remain extra vigilant in areas with road construction. Traffic patterns are constantly shifting. We'd rather meet with you at our station or a public event than on I-77.

TRAFFIC: Two car crash on I-77 north at exit 85, just after the entrance ramp. No injuries, but one hit the Jersey barrier. It’s going to be slow-moving in this area on your morning commute.
