FEMA has denied portions of Colorado's disaster declaration request related to the Aspen Acres and Gold Mountain Fires.

This included individual assistance for victims to recover and the hazard mitigation program. The Governor's office says the state has 30 days to appeal the decision.

On Christmas Eve, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office tragically lost one of our own, Emergency Management Coordinator Dean Berenbaum. Dean passed away at a local hospital surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his two daughters, his sister, and his former wife.

Dean was a devoted and loving father, a trusted and loyal colleague, and a dedicated and respected public servant. He first joined the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in 2009 as an Emergency Preparedness Intern and returned in 2019 as an Emergency Management Coordinator. Dean also served in emergency management roles with the City of Evans and the American Humane Society, and he generously volunteered his time with the Rampart Search and Rescue Team.

Throughout his career, Dean made a meaningful and lasting impact through his work in emergency management. We are deeply grateful for his service to the Adams County community and to the State of Colorado.

Services for Dean will be private.

Please keep Dean’s family, as well as his colleagues in the Office of Emergency Management and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Rest easy, sir.
