Calling all gardeners, producers, and chefs!! What are your favorite tomato varieties to grow and to cook with? 🍅 Do you struggle with disease pressure? What about blossom end rot? Have you ever tried an heirloom tomato?

Tomatoes can be a difficult crop to grow but we are here to make it easier for you. Join us for a presentation and demonstration at the farmer's market where you will:

-learn how to grow tomatoes 👨‍🌾
-identify diseases and issues tomatoes face
-review the preliminary data from our trial garden with over 35 varities
-learn how to save seeds and take some home to grow next year
-help us rank the best tasting tomatoes by taste testing different varities

This is a free event open to the public. We are sure you will walk away with plenty of knowledge, a few seeds to start next year, and a grin after taste testing delicious tomatoes grown by the Morgan County Master Gardeners. 🌱

We have received several calls into the office about White Grubs damaging lawns. These insects are the most damaging lawn pest in Colorado.
There are 5 main types of grubs in our state which cause damage. They are the Southwestern Masked Chafer, Japanese Beetle, May/June Beetle, Rocky Mountain Billbug, and Bluegrass Billbug. The larval stage is the main life stage causing damage for all of these insects by feeding on the roots of grass. For Japanese Beetles, the adult life stage can be very damaging too.
If you see brown patches in your lawn and suspect you have grubs, take a fistful of grass and see if you can pull it up like a rug. If it comes up easily, you likely will be able to see white grubs below the severed turf.
To control grubs, several methods can be used. Reducing watering frequency in mid-summer can create a less habitable environment for them. Several biocontrol products are on the market like parasitic nematodes and Bacillus thuringiensis which offer good control. Preventative insecticides like chlorantraniliprole (Scotts Grub Ex) can be applied in the spring and offer long residual control. If grubs are already present, trichlorfon (Bayer Bioadvanced grub killer) can be used as a rescue control. Billbug adults are best controlled with pyrethroid insecticides.
