Leadership Spotlight: DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden

We are proud to shine our Leadership Spotlight on DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden, a family man and public servant who returned home to serve the community where he grew up.

A Sylvania graduate, Welden worked for District 4 Commissioner Lester Black at his tire store after high school. He later worked for the Park Service, became a game warden and attended trooper school. After serving as a state trooper in three counties, he returned home to become Valley Head’s police chief before running for sheriff.

Welden and his wife, Audra, have been married for 24 years. They have four children: Cody, Chloe, Winter and Ridge.

Today, Welden leads a department of 140 employees. He says one of his biggest challenges is keeping staff motivated when they face repeat offenders. “I want my staff to know what they are doing is working,” he said.

He counts the department’s programs, a school resource officer in every school, more deputies on the road and added divisions in the jail among its accomplishments. Welden is completing his second term as sheriff and ran unopposed for a third term, which begins in November.

Come on out this Saturday, September 19th, and help support the DeSoto Rescue Squad, not to mention the Underwoods are some pretty amazing singers, and have been known to dance a little as well.

Hope to see you all there.

Please avoid the area of the 4700 block of CR-3 in the Whiton community. Deputies and local first responders are currently on the scene of a downed small aircraft in that area.

Harvest season is here, which means you’ll be seeing more combines, tractors, trailers, and other farm equipment traveling on our roads.

Please slow down, stay alert, and give farm equipment plenty of room. These large machines may be moving slowly, making wide turns, or taking up more than one lane.

Don’t try to pass unless it’s safe and legal.
Watch for equipment entering and exiting fields.

****** SCAM ******

We wanted to let the public know there is another scam going around with someone calling from Sand Mountain electric saying that you are two months late on your bill and asking you to pay.

If you get one of these phone calls and you are pretty sure you’re not late on your payment, hang up, call Sand Mountain electric yourself and ask them if you owe any money.
